Obviously the 3.0 will be a more powerful engine.

Is either engine more reliable than the other?  Is the 2.5 going to feel sluggish?  Do they have the same transmissions?

Why would someone choose to buy the 2.5 over the 3.0 or vice versa?

i have had both the 2.5 and the 3.0. The 3.0 is the way to go! The tanny is the same in both and one is not more reliable then the other. The 3.0 feels proper. the 2.5 is sluggish compared to the 3.0. not to forget the extra 30-50 horse power (can''t remember the tru number) If i had drove the 3.0 before I got the 2.5... I would have never got the 2.5...

3.0 for me too.
Very similar fuel economies but liek jvegas said more power from the 3.0.
Similar insurance here in the UK too.

I have owned both as well.  The 2.5 makes 195 HP and the 3.0 has 227 HP.  My 2.5 gave a max of 28 MPG highway, and, the 3.0 manages about 26.  Obviously the 3.0 has much more suds, but, I liked the 2.5 as well.  It never felt sluggish to me.  I initially bought the 2.5 because, at the time, the 3.0 models were much more expensive - about $4K difference I believe.

I don''t get why build two engines so close in size?  I can''t imagine what that does to production costs.  Just doesn''t seem very wise to me.

i think the 2.5 was a new motor for Jaguar. The 3.0 is the same as the 3.0 in the S-Type.

Which is derived from the Ford Mondeo V6 (same block, modified head and ECU).

JVEGAS - Pretty obvious, that, when Jag reduced the price of the 3.0 I jumped on one.  Also - I ain''t buying into the 227 HP rating for the 3.0.  I have a 3.5 Liter Saturn Aura that''s rated at 219 HP, and, the Jag is a least a full second faster to 60 than it is - even though the Jag is probabaly several hundred pounds heavier.

Jvegas - The night wife and I went to the unveiling event for the new Jag model, I approached a Jag factory guy and asked him directly about the HP rating on the 3.0 in the X.  He admitted it''s rating was "very conservative".  I suspect there''s very little actual difference between the X and the 236 HP version of the 3.0 in the S Type.  In addition, I''ve seen several dyno tests results for the 3.0 X posted on various forums over the years that indicate the engine actually puts out about 240 HP.  Wonder if anybody on this forum ever put one on a dyno??

Yeah I just test drove a 2.5 manual the other day. Seemed VERY sluggish. I didn''t get a chance to test drive a 3.0L but hope it is much better than the 2.5.

Manufacturers tend to Err on the side of caution after someone successfully sued Ford when their Mustang didnt have the claimed BHP it was quoted to have.It was a very expensive for Ford who had to do a recall I believe after losing.I dont know what they did to put them right or change things.

Buck - So yours peaked out at just over 240HP.  I think yours was one of the dyno tests I saw before.
