I have read through a TSB on checking driveshaft flange run out and diameters. It refers to using a new paper gasket at each end of the drive shaft "if present"
does anyone know what the story is with the gasket? should it be there? I Dont have a gasket at the transfer case end of the driveshaft, and I wonder why it is not there
My car is an 02 x-type 3.0 sport 5 speed

Very fehad thee gasket. If yours doesnt have it, dont worry about it.
