Hi everyone:
I got a 2001 S-type 4.0 from my aunt whose husband drove it until he died a few years ago. She didn't like driving it and so it sat for long stretches of time.  In addition, the previous owner drove it very little.  Therefore it has only 27,500 miles on it.  It WAS a great car until the honeymoon ended with a new tranny and shift cable $4K!  I found your forum and researched problems with it, and understand the nature of these transmission problems with Jags (that's what you get when you own a Jag, I was told).

Some background on me is that I have been doing my own auto mechanics since I was 12.  Used to do auto repair in my driveway for friends and relatives for spare change.  This is the first luxury car I've owned and I really like it a lot (except the tranny problem).  My previous British car experience was having a 1961 MG midget while in high school. It was a fun car to drive and tinker with and it always needed tinkering.  I currently am a sales manager for an electronics contract manufacturer in China, married 25 years to a wonderful woman, 4 sons, lived in Palo Alto almost my whole life.  Very grateful for forums which provide a lot of information about specifics and as a collective for sharing information.

Thanks,

Don G.

Welcome, One headache out of the way (trans). Listen for timing chain tensioners ( loud ticking), coil packs (misfiring). I would think that those sre the major probs otherwise the car is great.

I was surprised too at that failure after only 27K miles!  However, it is my favorite car to drive and the whole car is tight and runs spectacularly.  Just did my own brakes with the use of this forum and benefitted from the collective wisdom of all here.  Many thanks.

Just remember, cars do not like to sit.  Keep stretching its legs!
