Hi, everyone.  I am new to the site.  Just stumbled on today.  I own a jaguar S-type 03.  48,000, 4.2 l.  Just alittle history.  Bought the car with 23,000.  Within a month , car ran terrible, transmission jerking-- code came up torque converter bad. Changed it.   Problem fixed.   Happened again--reflashed tranny.  Problem fixed.  Recently, however, car is shifting hard, does not feel as quick .  When I come to a stop just before actually stopping I feel my car jerk alittle.  Like the tranny finally downshifted fully.  Does that make sense?  Took it to the dealer. No codes thrown. They told me I needed new tranny fluid and fuel injectors cleaned. They said Jag had changed the type of fluid used.  Wasnt covered under warranty . 800 dollars .  Sounded odd.  So I refused.  Any thoughts?

In total disclosure, this is the second jag I have owned.  The first, a beautiful 98 XJ8 VDP, succumbed to a primary tensioner problem , blew engine going 70 mph.  Heard the rattle for 6-8 months before failure. Jag checked it could not find anything. Asked them about tensioner, told me it could not be that.  When it happened ,I went up the chain to VP --no help.  There was no cause and effect I was told .  I owed 8000 on the car they gave me 4000 with the caveat I buy another Jaguar.  I tell you this , because at this point not sure I trust the dealership.  No other close ones around .  Sorry for the long  first post.

Welcome...hmm those problems can be very irritating.  Hopefully someone chimes in soon that could actually help you...

well jag didn't change the trani fluid.. all uses expensive mineral oil.. and there is specific software for certain problems that have to be downloaded into your car..or may need new valve body. but however when programming cars.. the shift adaptation.. is cleared.. and it takes time for the trani to shift to your driving habits..

thanks for the reply.  the  torque converter replaced at approx 25,000 miles, and reflash 30,000 miles.  How would I know if I need a valve body?   Would you change the fluid in the trans?

umm no but checking the level wud be nice. but a valve body is $3k  so i wud go thru the software part first.. the tech wud have to start the programming and then wud have to call the headquaters and ask for a specific problem software .. and the techline will give him a specific code to enter into the computer. then the specific software gets down loaded..   if the software doesnt fix it then it wud need a valve body of a whole trani.

Thanks, apparently the reprogramming was done last time .  They told me nothing was wrong with the car that cleaning my fuel injectors and changing the fluid would not fix.  I guess I need a second opinion.  Huh.

maybe fluid low. New software comes out all the time. I would get adaptions cleared and update done. Also get level checked.

My trans. does the same thing when coming to a stop it feels like it's downshifting into 1st late. I was told that it could be a software issue but I haven't had it updated yet. Hard reset did not do any good. I understand that this is pretty common. Still it's not right.

Thanks everybody,  It just an annoying situation.  I suppose they would have checked for new soft ware updates.  They had the car last month.  Think I will flush the system and clean injectors.  Cant hurt.  I will chalk it up to the price of Jaguar ownership.

I was told that software updates are not covered by SE. So I was told to drive it for awhile after clearing the fault codes and then bring it back in. Software updates will cost me 250.00.
P.S. I also occasionally have the car give a couple of jerks AFTER I am completely stopped.

Why wouldnt software updates be covered?  It is a jaguar issue, right?

ECM and TCM software updates are covered by Select Edition. No other software updates are though. Fuel injector cleaning is not covered by select.

BadMojo, I would call around and ask. But for sure we do ECM and TCM under select. Just make sure when they do the TCM that they also clear adaptions and perform the drive cycle. There should be a few miles put on the car to do the drive cycle. I can also give you the TSB that tells you how to do it so you can do it yourself also.

I just made an appointment with the dealer and they told me that reprogramming of the TCU is not covered by SE. Even if it is the cause of issues with the trans. it is not covered. I have the drive cycle but thanks anyway.
Just to confirm, I called SE and was told that reprogramming is not covered because it is considered a maintainance item.
Feel free to call customer service and ask about this and let us know what they say!!
