Hello all,
I am posting this for a friend of mine. He has a 2002
X-Type, with the 2.5 v6, with around 56k on it. Somebody
told him he needed to do a transmission flush (which Jag
says 100k according to dealer, but he didn't take it too a
dealer). Since this transmission flush the car drove fine
until about a couple days afterward. It seems the car has
gone into limp mode of some description, and will not go
past 3rd gear. Sometimes not go past 2nd. The guy at the
transmission shop that he took it too said if he just dumps
the fluid, and puts new fluid in there, it'll be fine.

I personally don't buy this, because obvious this isn't your
Grandpa's old Chevy pickup. It'd work on my old Ford Bronco,
but not my Bimmer.

Anyhow, I finally went over and drove the car, and as I said
it won't get out of 2nd, even with going to over to the
manual shift, and the display on the instrument cluster was
flashing ''Gearbox fault.'' I had him to (making sure he had
the radio code) pull the battery cable, wait 10 minutes,
then put it back on and see what happens, then take the car
to Autozone to get the codes pulled. He did this, and he
could get into 3rd gear at this point, but only through his
neighborhood, from there it'd only get to second. Luckily
Autozone is 2 blocks from his house.

These are the codes he got: p0733, p0734, p0778, and 1111 (I
don't know the letter in front of it). According to my
tranmission books, they mean:

P0733 Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio
P0734 Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio
P0778 Pressure Control Solenoid ''B'' Electrical .

Can anyone tell me what I need to do from here? Has he
screwed the transmission, or what would be something to do?

That's the problem with flushing a tranny with a lot of miles on the original fluid..It cleans too much all at once and the crud breaks loose and clogs hydralic channels and valves within..This is especially true if you go many miles on a tranny before you flush it..that's why it's always best to drain and refill every so often to keep the transmission fluid clean and free of sludge.

Hey Dennis, this kinda of reports make me what to forget about doing anything with trany fluid. Even drain and refill doesnt sound too much fun anymore.

Those codes indicate transmission replacement is in the works.
You might be able to find a shop to rebuild it. It is a Jatco box.

So there is nothing that can be done? Just go get it rebuilt? Should I try flushing it again?

Make sure the fluid level iscorrect first. Also clear the codes after setting fluid level correctly. An outside shop may have put incorrect fluid in there also when they did the flush. Fluid is expensive.

FJT, while we are on this topic, do you have any suggestions about a fluid? (other than factory)

People seem to like Amsoil. There is a post here on fluid changes. Lists all the oils used and amounts. Personally with the trans I would use only jatco fluid. Itstheir trans and they are sensitive.

Note: Only transmissions with an EKA suffix can be used in this Service Action. Transmissions with an EKA suffix must not be used to repair any vehicle not specifically covered by this service action.
2. Transmissions manufactured in September and October 2001 are more susceptible to this concern and therefore the customer contact strategy should focus on those vehicles within the VIN range C32605 to C62327.
3. Vehicles within the VIN range of C00519 to C32604 should be contacted last.
Note: Some vehicles contained in this service action may already have a replacement transmission. If so, the vehicle might not be eligible to receive a replacement transmission.
To determine whether the transmission requires replacement, check the transmission serial number. Replace the transmission only if the serial number meets the following conditions:
^ 2.5L and 3.0L starting with 11xxxxx.
^ 2.5L and 3.0L starting with 12xxxxx.
^ 2.5/3.0L: 1300001 - 1399999.
^ 2.5L: 1908190 - 1999999 & 1X00001 - 1X08740.
^ 3.0L: 1908384 - 1999999 & 1X00001 - 1X09438.
Note: If the serial number has a letter stamped behind it, do not replace the transmission - the letter indicates that it has been remanufactured to the latest specification.
If the serial number is outside this range, do not replace the transmission. Submit a claim for the inspection only.
In all cases, the replacement transmission serial number must be captured for Jaguar's database. This bulletin contains specific instructions on how to enter this information based on your dealer management system: ADP, Reynolds & Reynolds. All other DMS systems do not support this functionality; use the DDW system to update a serialized component as described in attachment # 4.
Below is an example to assist in interpreting the serial number.
Example: 1X15384.
The first digit indicates the year of manufacture (Examples: 1 - 2001; 2 - 2002; etc.) The second digit/letter indicates the month of manufacture (Examples) shown.
The digits 3 - 7 are the running number of the transmission manufactured in the year/month given.
The example serial number was the 15384th transmission manufactured in October 2001.
The procedure for replacing the transmission inclusive of an oil level fill and check is included in this bulletin.
