I replaced the turn signal switch on 1980 XJ6 and when I did the turn signal lights, inside the car on the instrument panel, just stay on now like they're stuck.  The lights themselves on the exterior of the car don't come on at all, I'm thinking that this may mean the turn signal relay is bad and I have no idea where it is located, Anyone else have any other ideas about this problem, please let me know, thanks.

Did it plug in just like the old switch?

I just had a question that just occured to me and I feel kind of stupid asking it but do all the turn signal bulbs need to be in the sockets for the signals to work, not sure if it was all interconnected. I guess kind of like old christmas tree light bulbs, when one went out or if one wasn't in the socket they all went out or just plain wouldn't work, thats what I'm thinking might be happening here, but I'm not sure if that works on this car or not.

check if hazard lights switch is properly installed when you put the plastic cover back. Similar happened to me...

I found the issue with the turn signals.. looks like that hazard light switch is the issue.. anyways I can operate the turn signals when the car is turned off and the key is out of the ignition. Also when I use right turn signal it shows on the outside the left is on and when I use left it shows that the right is on, maybe a wiring problem or hopefully something else a little more simple?
