Used X-Type seems cheap - WHY?

We are in the market for a new (used) car for my wife.
I''ve been looking at Honda Accords, Chevy Equinox, GMC Envoy, and noticed several low mileage 2002-2003 Jaguar X-Types for sale in the same price range. This surprised me...and I''m concerned that these particular Jaguars (used X-Types) are problematic...hence the low prices. I''m seeing them priced in the $9500 to $12,500 range.
Are there a high number of problems with this year range (2002-2003) X-Type? Should I stick to the Honda Accord?

There WERE many issues.. many of us are living. have lived through them.
The car is decent but there are a bunch of FOR sure thing that will happen.
A lot of it depends on if the car was winter driven. (why else would you get an AWD car?)Overall you need to budget for repairs, or the time to do them yourself.
I think that the x type is a good bargain, a lot of car for the dollar.
Dont expect to get much resale.. the price falls continuously...

No - it will be a Houston, TX purchase so it is very unlikely the car was ever used for "winter" driving. We don''t even have a "winter" here.

04''s and newer seem to be much better, but(fortunately for us looking to purchase) they still suffer the same stigma - price wise and can still find a decent bargain for an 04(you just need to look around)

One of my kids used to live near Houston. You do have some nasty rain storms, and, the AWD X is great in heavy rain.

the same reason the BMW 7 series is 100k off the line (V12 version) and 6 years later cost 1/5 of that... there are very few "high end" cars that hold their value well.

Should I stick to the Honda Accord?
you feel very different when driving a Honda vs. a Jaguar

I went from BMW to Honda to Jaguar. The jag beat them all in my opinion by a good distance. The Honda was very poor in comparison.

Dude I know there are some people out there that are all about the reliability and they don''t care about how the car looks or what the car is! I think you are that type of person. So buy the honda and be happy it is still to this day considered one of the most reliable cars out there. Personally I think that the new hondas and toyotas look VERY ugly and have NO sense of design or style there for I will never buy any of them and am thinking of buying a Jag. Yeah it may not be the most reliable but it sure does look stylish (especially the X-type)! And you don''t see anywhere near as many of Jags as Hondas and Toyotas (theres a reason to that also

What!?!? Buy the Jaguar! not the 02'' look for a later one but the Jag is a much better car all around. The honda is not what they used to be. The Honda from the early 90''s were good cars but not so much now.

As for Honda reliability. They are not as good as they were. Read up on Civinfo.com. My Civic was badly built and not reliable. It did have a great engine :)

I''m giong this week to look at a 2004 X-Type 3.0. It is the exact color my wife wants, and has 40K miles on it.
If I can make a suitable deal with the guy...we''ll drive it home. I''ll report back after we look at it tomorrow (Tuesday).

You may also get lucky and have warranty on it still.
Don''t be scared by the year of car! People give lots of flack on the 02/03 but you must consider the price you are paying! If you pay less than 10k on an 02/03 why bother with an 04? You can buy a warranty for the car and have almost everything covered. Good luck I''m in the DFW (bedford more specifically) area of texas, the jag is tremendous in rain storms, looks and overall appeal. It''s an ultra safe car that gets decent gas mileage. Keep in mind every car has its problems!

If the reliability was main and the most paramount concern everyone would drive a honda

I came to the same conclusion. I was looking for a used car that got better then 25mpg highway. An 03 camry with leather and 77k was on a dealer lot for $12999. I just picked up an 02 sport 3.0l loaded, for $8000. 73k. Looked at a ton of stuff on Craigslist, VW honda chevy etc.... A used Lexus for $8000 would have 160k on it.
The Jag rides nice as he!! It''s fun, looks good and is no ford. Yes I''ve got a few issues to sort out, but I think you''ll like it. Specially with a lower milage/newer car than mine. Seat motor bottom tilt (seat is in a good position for me), parking interlock solenoid click, washer nozzle (JB weld),
The camry may last longer, but I figure I need about five years of service and another 75k out of it and I''m OK.
Picked it up in Phoenix and drove it back to Ft Worth. 1000 miles drove 74-78 most of the way. The computer said we avg speed 63 and 28.0 mpg
Drive it like you stole it

Funny, I have to get 11k out of my 02 sport with 73k miles...8k is a good deal especially for a sport.

Well - we went to check it out and were VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!
It looked amazingly clean in the pics, but when we got there...it was (IMO) trashed. The previous owner had obviously not taken care of it.
1. the side molding (below the door) was loose and falling off
2. it had been smoked in (heavily)
3. the interior had stains on the carpet
4. the airbag on the steering wheel looked like it was deployed and then re-installed improperly...the cover was curled up on all 4 corners and looked like junk
These were just the immediate things we saw. Probably all could be corrected, but (to me) it is an obvious indication of the life this Jag has led...and I was not interested.
We drove it...just because my wife wanted to see how it drove and if she even liked the X-Type''s driving characteristics and I will say - WOW - it drives like a dream. Handles great, very smooth and quiet ride. My wife was impressed (me too) and we are definitely MORE interested in buying a Jaguar now...just NOT this one!!

Welcome aandy! Another ft worth jag owner. Be sure to post up and subscribe to all posts in the SW section so you can be notified of any local happenings. I''d hate for you to miss something as important as a lunch and drive with the rest of us DFWers. lol

Other than 2.5 vs 3.0...I really don''t know what "options" there are to consider.
I know there''s a "sport" model, but that doesn''t interest me at all. Our biggest concern is getting a 3.0 and the right color combo. Other than colors and engine size...are there other "options" I don''t know about or haven''t noticed?

Heated seats, Heated mirrors, Memory seats, HID headlights, Back up sensors, 6 disk changer, ACM (This thing is cool. let''s you connect iPod), Bluetooth, 18 inch wheels, 17 inch wheels, Home Link (for garage opener and has a lil light that brightens up the J-Gate at night... Very nice as well), Nav screen, TV''s in headrest, Wood wheel, DSC, Chrome side view mirrors, Pipping on the seats, and power rear sun screen. I think thats it...
