What is the shallow covered bin located inside the engine bay passenger side by firewall used for? It sits just behind the shock absorber mount.
FJT?

Are you referring to the black tray? Below that is where the ECM and tcm live.
The little tray itself could be used for keeping your lunch warm for all I know. I have never seen anything in there.

A factory-available fitted toolkit lives there, but was an extra-cost or after-purchase option in the US; I believe some of the European cars came with them as standard equipment.

Nice to know I too can learn something here.
I am not sure how much of a tool kit it could have been. That is a really small space.

Wow, FJT, nice to hear you are human - I thought maybe you were some computer-generated "fountain of all usable knowledge about Jaguars!" I am continually amazed at your willingness to help everybody - thanks for that!!!

Nice one.
I have a 2001 VDP so Monday morning I will be in the parts department to see if they are available. Never can you have too many tools.

Interesting....yes, you can never have too many tools, as long as the storage space never runs out...

My 95 XJ6 also had fuses and a fuse removal tool in that compartment. Very handy as on extremly hot days the cooling fans would sometimes blow a fuse!
