Default VIN decoding

It is pretty straight forward. For each VIN letter or number or group of either there is a value which can be decoded. The most straight forward description was a thread I found here in fact.

(Decoding european VIN number of XK8)

Now, I have a lovely 4.0 L XK8 convertible and in the seventh position I expected to find a number between 1 and 9 but my VIN has a 0. If I use a VIN decoder (which does not break it down - only tells me what it describes), it correctly says I own a 4.0 L.

Anybody have insight into this?

The answer probably lies within your own posting..... "Decoding European VIN" .....with "European' being the key word

If yours is originally a **North American market car** (and I suspect it is) you'll need to use a website that decodes North American VINs.

There are multiple VIN conventions in use around the world. Manufacturers assign a VIN in accordance with the market that the car will be sold in

You are correct of course should have realized it from the git go. Once I searched a bit deeper my issue was resolved immediately. Thanks though.

Thanks Andy. Actually, Doug nailed it. According to my VIN the car was produced at Brown's Lane and is not a Ford car. I did, just for interest's sake, plug my VIN in the vehicle lookup in the Ford link you gave and it returned the message that "We are sorry, but no information could be found for the VIN/Registration number you entered". I wish it were so though. Might make parts shopping a LOT cheaper....

Hi Rigelprime,

Huh thats odd, as all our XK8/R cars were made at Browns lane until the last XK in May 2005.
Ford owned Jag then so the site should find info for you.... it did for my XKR's
not to say you may have had a typo ...but I would try again.

Cheers
Andy

PS: I was crusin' & fishin' in your fiords 4 yrs ago... spectacular!

Default Ford built Jaguar

Nope, checked it twice and submitted it again and got the same response. If it was built by Ford as you say, they seem to have disavowed the darned thing. Where did you travel here, might I ask? The attachment is the view of the Canadian mainland from my place on Quadra Island.

I agree. I have live many places. I was even President of the Fish and Game in Yellowknife NWT and I prefer here. Our summers are warm but seldom too hot and sunny but not humid - like central and eastern Canada so often are.
