Default How does a 72 E-Type have only 49,025 km on the clock?

Gday guys

I dont normally venture into the E-Type section but I have been looking into getting a second jaguar later on down the track and just doing some very early research.

Anyway, I saw this online today:

1972 Jaguar E Type 2+2 Auto

My question is, is it likely an E-Type can have this low a mileage (49K) ?

Wow my XJS had 190 000 odd km's when I got her and she is from 1985.

Is it quite common for people to have purchased these back in the day and hardly use them?

Crying shame lol!

Anybody out there use your E-Type as a daily driver?

"Quite common"? Probably not, but certainly not unheard of. Sometimes people who buy expensive/special cars own several of them, possibly kept at various locations, and driven only when opportunity and mood strikes.

It looks like it's actually miles Paul so about 79K Km's but still not a lot since 1972.

Hello Paul,
In the majority of cases, the miles covered and the odometer reading do not correspond. A friend of mine bought a car from a shonky dealer in Michigan where the mileage was advertised as being in the mid 30Ks, yet the service receipts showed mileage well in excess of this 20 years earlier.

A fairly reliable indication of the true mileage of an E Type is the degree of wear in the ball joint socket of the upper, front suspension wishbone.

Regards,

Brent

Default Paper Trail

I just purchased a '69 e-type roadster with original 47K. Verification came from the provenance, the paper trail of repair receipts, registrations, and the XKEData site, which showed the cat in '04 with virtually the same mileage! Reason: both owners were collectors with a hundred cars!
My concern is how all that rubber has held up, fuel lines, etc., so upon delivery it was off-loaded at the shop, even after a PPI.

Yeah the more I look online the more I find with such low mileage.

I guess the E-Type was one of those cars alot of people collected or drove only on occasion.

Anybody here have one as a daily driver?

As a general rule, sports cars tend to be used less, being mostly summer use. Ferraris for instance, seem to leave the locked dealer premises to get locked-up in the new owners premises only seeing the light of day on a few days per year. On the other hand....

Cars of this era are very easy to "clock", so any declared low mileage needs to be supported by use documents like roadworthiness certificates, service invoices etc. As an example, my 1977 MG Midget on 35k miles has all the service records from new, plus the MOT certificates. I even have the original dealer invoice !!

Although there are genuine low mileage E Types to be found, the majority that show low mileage are on their second time round, or have had the odometer played with. I have a friend who bought a genuine 3.5K miles car. This was evidenced by the heads being able to be removed easily by hand (no pullers required), the pristine condition of the head studs, the pristine condition of the splined hubs, and many other mechanical aspects of the car. The car had been stored outside for over 30 years and as a consequence, the body is well beyond economical repair.

E Types, when they first came on the scene, were a low cost sports car and didn't attract collectors status until many years later. Clearly more years on than would result in the majority being limited to low miles. I would treat a low mileage car with extreme scepticism until examination proved it to be so.

Regards,

Brent

Wasn't driven much, My 57 MK1 has 60K and my 58 has 49K. Parted a 64 MK2 with 60K. And all were not in good shape.

Cheers guys. I appreciate the feedback.

I guess also if it has had an engine replacement over the years she's gonna go back to zero as well.

Do any of you guys use your E-Type as a daily driver?

I am away at work for 1 month at a time but when I am home I drive my XJS everyday whether its just down the shops or out for lunch in the mountains. I am home for a month straight so she gets used a fair bit.

Now in saying that she is younger in years (1985) so interested in seeing if many people drive a much older car (take the 72 E-Type for example) in the same way?

If I got an E-Type I would surely drive her as much as possible when I was home...if it was feasible.

Mine is a 73 (only a mere XJ,if I dare mention that here!) but it gets driven every day by myself and Learner and P plate drivers . If I had an XKE or a D-Type, even a C-Type that wouldn't change. It would be driven by all that wish to take the wheel.
Cars are built to to be enjoyed by all,I don't care if my car cost $2000 or $2,000,000 . I would let my son drive it on P's or L's....and take his mats out in it.

It's all about the joy of driving, not the privilage!

Remember, though, that an XJS is a modern-ish automobile with some amenities and comfort

At various times I've owned older cars and drove them quite often....but that isn't quite the same a 'daily driver'.

E-types are a tough example, because, IMHO, they are very hard to climb into and not very comfortable once you do! I simplt can't get comfortable. Plus, ventilation is virtually non-existent. No cruise control, etc. If I had one I'd anxiously look forward to that weekend drive.....and just as anxiously look forward to getting back into a comfortable car.

Cheers

I have a 1972 S3 OTS with only 31K mls on it. Everything, paint, chrome, interior etc is original.
I bought it with only 3200 miles on it and used it as my daily driver for nearly three years.
But I was in my 30's then!
It does happen ......

My '72 is just a hair over 24K miles and like your 98% original, last set of tires went on in 1983.

IME, S3 cars are far more plentiful with low miles, S1 cars, not so much. They were used as intended as the S3 signalled the end of the E and many speculated that their resulting value would be huge and were used sparingly as a result.

I will tell you, without deviation, an original low mileage car (if preserved correctly) will always out drive a freshly restored car. If you ever get a chance to drive one, do it, you'll smile the entire way. It's a great experience..

Is there any proof the odometer hasn't gone around more than once? Could be 49, or 149, or even 249,000miles.

Are car of this age though, it doesn't really matter, what matters is the quality of the restoration work that has been done to it.

Suss out the RHD conversion work and whether it's been done cleanly, and the paint quality.

This is the least desirable of all the E types, but still a very nice car.
