Default First oil change inquiry ?

I haven't even taken possession of my 2017 F Type S manual convertible yet, (June hopefully) and I'm all ready planning on when to change the oil. What is the general consensus on first oil change and the mileage intervals between changes? I've always bought cars outright and keep them beyond the warranty period. I just think 15000 mile intervals are fine if you just want to get to the end of the warranty. Any thoughts on this and Hopefully this isn't a redundant post....

A lot of folks have done an early oil change at about 3K miles, as a just in case strategy to remove metal shavings, etc. from engine break-in. It's not necessary, but I did it as well. It's fairly cheap insurance.

After that, I'm just going w/ the annual oil changes, but only logging about 6K miles per year.

Ditto to Foosh's advice. At first my dealer tried to sell me on needing to change the oil at least every 6 months; but they rather relented when I pressed them on it.

+1. Since I drive the car about 1000 miles/month, I'll be replacing the oil/filter half way between the annual servicing and run a used oil analysis each time the oil is changed. Overkill, but cheap insurance since I can change the oil/filter myself.

Yep; what they said: 1st change early to get out the wear particles (though they probably don't amount to much but it certainly can't hurt) and then, like Foosh, I will do my oil changes annually as I'll never make the mileage interval in a year.

Waiting for 15000 miles for the first oil change is insane. You should change first time no later than 1000miles, then change filter few times before second oil change. Also, while breaking in the engine, make sure to work through the range of RPMs and loads - so don't cruise-control for 1000miles to get to first oil change.

I've had 3 oil/filter changes between 3000 and 3300 miles but that's another story for a different thread....

If you really want to know what's going on inside your engine oil, you can have it tested by these guys:
http://m.blackstone-labs.com/WhyOilAnalysis

If nothing else read their FAQ, it's good for a laugh.

See the thread linked below. It's an AWD issue, and doesn't apply to your ordered manual V6S.

I am too lazy to do this, so lets assume my car is just like yours...

Could you please type up your results?

Unhinged
What information came from the analysis of your spent oil? Did you increase the frequency of changes based on this info? I'm curios what one of these reports looks like.

Starting with this post you can see typical results as well as the analysis of virgin oil:https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f...2/#post1331687. I used the info to determine that I could go 5-6000 miles before the next oil change. The next analysis will be even more telling, as the wear in metals (what little there were) are now out of the system and I can extrapolate how much I can really go between oil changes. The analysis will also help me determine if the performance work I have had done is leading to excessive wear.

I had first oil changed at 1500km, and had oil filter changed again at 3000km since I started pushing the car after that. Next oil change will be at 5000km. This oil change will include a number of track days where car will be pushed.

Looking at Unhingd's oil analysis numbers, 1500km oil change might have been unnecessary this early, but I don't know how gently he drove during break-in. Thing is, for me it was simpler to just get oil change done than bothering with sending oil samples. Just because he got very little metal in the oil early on, does not mean I would.

I've been having samples analyzed. I started that with my previous car because I wanted to know how safe the "extended" oil change interval was, since it was double my accustomed one. With my F-Type, the interval is doubled again, I continued the practice. I'll get my most recent analysis posted in the oil analysis thread. I did change my oil early based on the analysis, even though there was nothing alarming. Metals were increasing, as expected, but it seemed a safe bet. That, and I was bringing the car in for other reasons too: might as well get the oil changed while it's there.

This Forum never ceases to amaze me. Such a wealth of experience and knowledge. I ask what I think is a simple straight forward inquiry about oil changes and I find my self reading about oil analysis, predictive maintenance by tribology...wow I'm humbled and honored

+1 Agree as these folks have been very helpful with me and my questions and Unhinged has answered all my questions and taught me so much over the little time I've been here. Humbled and honored for them.

I drove exactly per the break-in instructions.
