Default Check engine light on, but no code....

Ok, I've got a mystery - here's the facts:

I own a 2009 Jag XF 4.2L , naturally aspirated, runs perfect. Getting anywhere from 19-27 mpg.

Engine light icon comes on the dash yesterday at 5pm. I have driven it 22 miles since. Took it to very nearby AutoZone for a code reading and there is no code given, like its not throwing a code. (I know Autozone code reader may not be as in depth as a Jag dealer's.)

Car is running perfectly. Same mileage per gallon, same everything.

Later last night I check my email and I have an email from a local Jag dealer offering $20 off lube oil, filter service and 15% off scheduled maintenance.

The car has 61,150 miles on it, meaning I've driven it roughly 10,000 since this dealer last saw the car (which they wouldn't know.)

My question is, does anyone think this is just a maintenance reminder ? Can they program a reminder notification into the car?

Or is there something wrong?

Thanks for all and any opinions....

It only seems like it's running OK. Something is wrong, even so. With elm327 (& other) OBD tools so cheap I'd use one.

I tend to agree with your thoughts, but the frustrating thing was that no code was displayed when we read it at a local auto part supplier.

I was wondering if the engine icon could be displayed at certain intervals or is pre-set to display when regular maintenance is advised.

Now it's off after driving about 25 miles.

So no check engine light now.

Why would this happen? Anyone have any ideas? (I'm taking it in anyway.)

You used a tool which failed to work. I suppose it was worth what you paid. I can only repeat my previous advice...

Wow.

I paid nothing, so yes, quite accurate. Went to 2 other repair shops to have it read and nothing showed up, and as stated - now there is no code.

Going to the dealer this week and will find out more or if it is a false notification akin to the TPMS.

Thanks for your advice.

Could have been the classic loose gas cap. A dealer might want $100 or so to read codes. Buy a reader for your own use in the future.

Codes stay stored a long time even after the fault goes away. If those shops can't read it either one cleared the code or they have defective tools such as ones that choose to ignore old codes or non-generic ones.

Even an elm327 works better than that...... and is crazy cheap.

Yep, I'm skeptical like you - I'll be at the dealer Thursday, driving my other car for a couple of days.

Default P0411 Code finally read...

Fuel mix is off, told it won't pass emissions - $585 to fix. Ouch.

Was intermittent. Check engine came off an on. Not fond of environmentalists - the car probably doesn't even need this part to run and didn't even have it when I was a kid!

Sorry to interrupt here. Interesting thread as I know nothing about hand held diagnostic devises and have needed one for about 30 years. I just followed the elm327 link and found a multitude of $10.00 devices which of course leads me to ask which one does anybody recommend?

Thanks

Any that works for YOUR car but what is it?

You connect via phone/tablet/PC so figure out which of those, too.

Any non-broken elm327 should work with any car since about 2004 (or whenever your law for OBD came in...)

Well Gee. That sounds simple enough. I've had very good luck with cheesie Chinese crap. When hand-held diagnostics came out in the '80s they were out of the question for the little guy. Fast forward and they're $10. For a Jag-u-r no less.

Thank You JagV8

They're staggeringly good value. I leave one in my car, just in case.
