Unhappy Chrome restorer?

I have a 1990 XJS V12 with chrome accents on the door. Unfortunately some parts are pitted and I can't remove the piece to have it rechromed. Is there some way to make it presentable (I understand it cannot be perfect) while still on the car? I can mask all around the chrome but don't want to use any power tools for fear of messing up the original paint should I slip.

I recommend posting photos and further details on whether you're looking to colour code of just improve the chrome.

Default Photo of chrome

Here are photos of the chrome piece. I have been told it is after market and likely chromed metal and not plastic. I don't want to color the piece.

Thanks for any help.

You might try polishing with aluminum foil and water (tape off around the chrome). If there is rust, the chemical reaction will remove and re-shine the chrome. You can see some information and other places too:

Cleaning Chrome - Roberts Cycle

I did this on a chromed license plate holder that was pitting had had some surface rust starting and it worked pretty easily. Other sites mention using cola (with phosphoric acid) to work with the aluminum foil.

I have no experience with this but here's Eastwood's solution:

These parts are readily available online. Aftermarket dealer add on trim. Might look up a trim specialist in your area and have them order or order and install. Would be cheaper than dealer as you would pay the trimmer without a dealer % added on.

WD40 or Ballistol and a light rub with steel wool. The aluminium foil method sounds interesting, I might try that when this next turns up.
