gear shift

Maureen,
First and foremost, WELCOME to the real world.
Might pay to add your vehicle details via the "User CP" area, so everyone knows you have a 2002 S Type. Also add the engine size, etc to really clear up what we are assisting with repairing as time goes by.
There is a nylon slidder on the gearlevr shaft, just below the console cover, and this is quite well documented as breaking when force is used to remove the car from P when it gets stuck due to the car being on a slope, and the weight of the car has jammed the P thingy inside the transmiison. DUMB I know, but that is how it is.
There is a post, or a "stickie" about this in the S Type section.
Someone that is way more smarter than me with computers will slide by soon and attach the link for you, but in the meantime, have a quick look in the S Type area, it will be there.
