I have confirmed my hard drive is O.k by booting a laptop up with it & using ScanDisk.
It also boots into windows 98.
But I have had no time to look at the circuit boards again in detail yet.

Hi
Yes I am interested in buying a WDS set-up as my PTU is faulty.
Where abouts are you & how much do you want?
Contact me at howiedintheplace@hotmail.com

Thanks.

If you look a few posts back you will see the links to down load the disc's.

They work great as I have tested them.

The "B-45 Updates", did anyone get that to work? After installing B-45 and inserting the update disc, it didn't do anything.

...there is a .pdf file in that cd's root directory with some directions, you can also find them in http://files.pancybertronics.com/ford/directions.pdf

3548-5248-00 = C248 Red Probe, for WDS DVOM and Oscilloscope
3548-5249-00 = C249 Black Probe
3548-5250-00 = B250 CPC Diag Cable, if memory serves, it's for round diag connector on '93-'94 XJ40 and XJS OBDI models
3548-5251-00 = B251 PM4 Diag Cable, for '90-'92 4.0L OBDI models
[WDS was intended to at some point work on these OBDI cars, but it never happened]
3548-5252-00 = C252 Cable [Black] for Driveshaft Balancer Optical Sensor
3548-5253-00 = C253 Cable [Blue] for Vibration Analyzer Accelerometer

Hope that helps!

Ha Ha

I have a WDS but it seems to be a higher spec than what is talked about here.

It is 275mhz, has a 20gb hard drive, 64mb of ram & runs 98SE.

I think it was one of the last examples & was for Jags judging by the cables with it.

Possibly a Aston Martin one, do you know if there was a upgraded WDS towards the end of it's life?

Default WDS Win 98 SE ? and questions please

Hi , I am doing some more work on my WDS units as I think I have about 5 now. I have two working great and have been testing and repairing the boards but is not easy. I have replaced some surface mount power transistors and now have the external battery power/charge working again as I expect they may have had the wrong power supplied to them .

I now have three mother boards that I am using which are all 275mhz cpu so wondered if it is possible with a working system (jag or ford loaded on hard drive) to use a Win98 SE Upgrade cd to upgrade the windows system or is the only way with a WIN98SE Ghost disc with Jag or Ford ?

Also I have two boards (looks like power supply and interface (the lower smaller pcb in the rear half of the case) that I think work but with the diagnostic tests with ST210 Plug I get a error . the error is different every time I test and wonder because I was testing it with a later main board (275mhz) and so may try them with a older 245MHZ board next. Any one had this and is it to do with software miss match as I was thinking it should give the same error all the time not random errors ?

I think I did this WAY back when the WDS was kinda new.
I don't remember if it was WDS or the Jaguar Multimedia PC.

I would imagine that the SE upgrade would NOT interfere with the system operation but RE-GHOSTING would repair any damage done.

I think I will try it on one of my HDDs loaded with version 43.

I still have all my Win 98, FULL 98 UPGRADE FULL, SE UPGRADE etc. discs for all the computers I've had over the years.

Hello All,

Thanks for all the great info on this site.

In the absence of a working WDS unit, I've been trying to install to a HDD on an old laptop. This has been partially successful so far.

I may have missed the detail elsewhere here, but disk A6, the Ghost Disk, has a Norton Ghost V5.1b image. V5.1b would appear to be limited to restoring the image to a disk of less than 8.4GB.

The work around for disks larger than that is to use a utility to set the HDD to less than 8.4GB. In my case I'm using an old 40GB Samsung drive and Samsung ESTool V3.00U.

Once A6 has installed, B45 will not load. I'm not sure if it is the lack of red and green buttons or a driver clash between the imaged W98 and my hardware.

I can boot to W98 in safe mode.

Cheers
John

B45 Loading looks to be hardware related.

I have a 2.4Ghz Laptop, but the W98 on disk A6 only supports up too 2.1GHz processors.

The problem is the NDIS driver. On a failed boot the safemode boot menu comes up, Select Step by Step boot and choose no for loading NDIS. Now W98 would boot and update enough drivers to recognise the CD-Rom.

Once into W98 with CD-Rom I could load B & C disks. The updates try to patch the PC BIOS twice. No big deal as my laptop is not AMI so it just fails, but on an AMI equipped PC it could get interesting. It continues to try to do the BIOS update each reboot, it is called from autoexec.bat and can be edited out for a PC install.

There are patches for the NDIS problem, I loaded the 1st of these two;
Windows 98 Second Edition Problems with NDIS Intermediate Drivers
AnandTech Forums - View Single Post - Windows 98 NDIS hangs on boot up

System Error 700 is displayed when WDS starts up, if any one knows it ?

Hello,

Been snooping around the files installed by the A6, B45 and C5 disks, and there is a file;

remove_to_2002.bat

It deletes all the calibration files of an earlier than 2002, which just happen to be the ones I'm interested in.

Anyone have earlier disks with files before 2002 ?

In particular I'm interested in the GHAJ0 series calibrations.

The calibrations are under C:\GDS3500\Flash\

Cheers

Installing the WDS software on a generic laptop is not going to let you diagnose anything.
You don't have any 'VCM' (vehicle communication module) to interface Windows 98 to a Ford/Jaguar/Mazda/Aston Martin.

The PTU has a built-in hardware interface for this purpose.

I once installed a PCI card to the docking station and the software did not recognize it.
The software install failed at that point. The software will load properly if the PTU and docking station are in original configuration.

You can add hardware later in windows 98 mode (printers, PCI cards etc.)

Hello Bob,

Thank you for your concern.

At this stage I don't have a PTU, so before buying / shipping one, I wanted to know a little more.

So, it lets me see what calibrations are included.

As it happens the calibration for my vehicle is not included with Ford C5-1 & C5-2.

My Vehicle runs GHAJ0 strategy, from the '95-96 era, and has 2 wire DCL comms. The WDS says DCL is a supported protocol.

I now know I most likely need CD C1 or possibly C2 through C4. Elsewhere I see that B26 may be needed with C1.

Throughout this long thread there are questions about loading on alternate ways to load the software. It also confirms installation can be completed on hardware other than the Dock or a rigged up external CDrom. So I know I have the option of getting a PTU only.

I've also tried installing CD B in Windows without first installing CD A. WDS started up in a desktop mode.

I don't have any WDS hardware at all, but I have a better understanding of what hardware to get, and the preferred software revision loaded on that hardware.

I once installed a PCI card to the docking station and the software did not recognize it.
The software install failed at that point. The software will load properly if the PTU and docking station are in original configuration.

I've managed to install the software to the laptop, including available drivers for the laptop hardware.

Understandably, WDS wont do much as some of the expected peripherals are not attached. Most notably the touch screen which appears in Device Manager as a Mouse.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

This is the earliest software set that I have.....

A5
B37
C4-1
C4-2

I didn't realize that you just wanted to find out what was in the software and did not expect to actually use it on a generic laptop.
I have people contact me and ask for the software and then want to know if it will work on a Toshiba or a Dell etc.
They are disappointed to find out that they NEED the PTU (or some home made VCM).

Good Luck with your experiment.
