I think I found my problem with the SDD software. It does not appear compatible with 64-bit operating systems. Doesn't seem to care what 32-bit platform (Win XP or 7), but definitely not 64-bit friendly.
Once that has been resolved, not the challenge is to work through all the menus and figure out what it is telling me.
Thanks to al those who tried to help.

I have a dedicated XP Pro laptop for SDD but also installed v1.34 in a Virtual Machine on my Windows 8.1 64.bit laptop just to see if it would work. It does but rather slowly.

It seems to me that issues with IDS are a recurring theme and are often rooted in incorrect setup (Wrong OS version, wrong service pack level, etc). Virtualization software (VmWare or VitrualBox) is a tool that can overcome these issues.
I am very familiar with building VMs. If someone gives me the IDS software I will gladly build the VMs. In the VmWare world there is a tool that will grab all software from an existing "bare metal" installation and make it into a VM for future use. This allows you to retire old computers but keep the software that was installed on them running on new ones.
It looks like different versions of IDS have their merits and there may be a reason to keep multiple versions around. VM makes it easy, you can just bring the right one. If the VM is tuned and configured correctly, it should not be significantly slower than a "bare metal" installation, provided no other heavy software is running on the same computer.

A little update about SDD.
Newer versions (at least 134-up) have problems with launching an old legacy tools (IDS) for a pre-2004 vehicles.
I've downgraded to v.128, with offline activation, now legacy tools works fine (i've tested it on a 2001 XJ8 and 2002.5 S-type, the cable is mongoose clone).
If anyone wants this version and login/pass - PM me.

Several posts in this thread talk about where to get SDD software. I have version SDD-V130. Have you contacted MoscowLeaper?
I would be glad to give it to anyone but the folder is giant at 13.5GB. This also includes some other things to explain the install. So it probably needs to have the files hosted somewhere for download.
