Question Paint clearing screw

Hi,
I'm tidying up the front of my 04 XK8 and was going to replace the bolts holding the nose at the top.
Looking up new ones I was horrified by the price, £6-£12 EACH! (6 required)
Apparently they are 'paint-clearing screws' - why are they special and can I replace them with ordinary bolts?
Otherwise it's down to cleaning up the old ones!
Thanks.

Once the paint is cleared, I would imagine that regular fasteners can be used???

P/N JZS100156 - M6 x 25mm Paint clearing screw? Jaguar and the aftermarket parts suppliers all have this part at a similar lunatic cost.

The Land Rover Discovery also uses M6 x 25mm Paint clearing screws (P/N GG106252) at a more sensible £0.38p + VAT.

Could be worth investigating if this is a suitable substitute.

£0.38p + VAT

... much better.

Particularly for us ex-vat types.

That's not a vat, them's vats.

Apparently "paint clearing screw" is a Ford term,
and a Ford spec. They even have them by year.

Everyone else would be tempted to call them self
tapping screws. Not exactly, but they have a flute
in the shank meant to clear the paint from the
thread that will hold the screw.

Found the definition, but lost the thread until you
popped it up again.

Thanks guys.
Whilst getting some other bits I did ask the Jaguar parts guy and he
explained it was, as plums said, just a bolt with a fluted shank.
Yes GGG it is part #JZS100156 so I'll have a look at the LR part or, as I need quite a few other replacement bolts as well, just use standard ones.

The patents on 'paint clearing screws' state they were developed to assist automated assembly where parts may not be perfectly aligned and/or holes are partly blocked with paint. This is why the tips have a smaller diameter than the main body of the screw.
