SAJJ = World Manufacturing Identifier (Jaguar)
P = Model Range (XJR)
A = Class (Base Spec)
L = Body Variant (4 Door Saloon)
F = Engine Variant (4.0 litre S/C)
3 = Transmission & Steering (Auto RHS)
C = Model or Year Change
R = Emission Control System
847790 = Production Serial Number

All of which is vastly more than you have told us but probably nothing you don't already know about your vehicle.

Graham

Default JTIS . . . this answer and many more

Hello Geoff . . . and greetings from the nearby east coast of the West Island.

I feel confident that, with Graham's decode, a few extra suggestions may be helpful . . .
  • this info, and the answers to thousands of other questions, are all answered in JTIS (factory workshop manuals). . . either download from the Stickys here, or get yourself a disk based fully bookmarked all PDF version;
  • I recommend you do not advertize the final 6 of your VIN# - as Graham's decode shows, all the prior alpha-numerics in your VIN# have generic meanings, but the final 6 identify your specific vehicle - it is for this reason you often see the final 6 displayed here as 84XXXX;
  • Jaguar Cars (and JTIS) tracks model changes, updates etc by referring to these final 6 in the VIN# so choose any X masking of your final 6 such that both you and others can still "place" the car for parts changes etc.
I hope this added info helps,

Ken

I'm wondering why not to mention the last 6?

Anyone walking by the car can see them and that doesn't seem to cause trouble.

Thanks guys , I have been having trouble with working out if the car was " original " or a bitsa car . It has a x300 jag sticker on it and I was confused as I thought the v8 was classed as a x308 , but I can see that it is an original, I got the car on a hoist last week and had a good look under it and it's sti like new under the car, it's been looked after very well I'm glad to say !
Thanks for the guide to being surcure with online posts !
Have a great weekend guys !

I'm not advocating secrecy . . . the point you make is both valid and logical . . . I am just noting that it is a growing trend both on public forums, and even more so in our car sales advertisements. This ties in with recent advice from various Police jurisdictions that owners of luxury vehicles should take steps to avoid their car falling victim to the "stolen to order" and "re-birthing" trades . . . hence avoidance of residential address, personal phone numbers or garage locations in any luxury car dealings. Vide . . . the countless numbers of cars here with number plates blanked out . . .

For their part, the authorities here have introduced mandatory "write-offs" whereby seriously damaged cars, even if theoretically repairable, can never again be re-registered.

Seems misguided. The criminals don't drive across to a car because they have the VIN from a forum or ad so much as drive the streets till they find one and then steal it. They don't care what the VIN is up to that point and may well not care then.

Still, can't hurt to hide things, except criminals do that of course!

If this is of no consequence in the UK, great. However, re-birthing via cars stolen to order has apparently relied on such data, and I think it best if we close this topic rather than discuss suspected methods in further detail.

Geoff,

Didn't I rotate your Avatar 180 degrees so it wasn't upside down?
