Default rear brakes

X-Type 2006

When driving down my rather steep driveway it seems as if the rear brakes are not working at all. This is winter driving and they work fine on flat ground, but going down an incline the fronts grab causing us to slide. What is the cause a sensor of some sort? if so it should show up as a ABS fault or??

Bill, do you use your e-brake often? Have you noticed the e-brake being rather easy to pull up (especially the first half if not more)?

What I have seen is if you have a caliper that is hanging up on the e-brake lever, it will cause the pads to wear to the point that they won't be able to grab any more as the e-brake is what adjusts the rear pads to keep them in proper distance from the rotor. I would say you need to pull the rear wheels off and see if you can push the e-brake lever back towards the rear bumper. If you can look at both wheels at the same time, you may notice that one lever is more forward than the other. The one that is more forward is the one that has a sticking lever.

As for the fix. You have 3 options. You can try removing the lever and then applying a little bit of grease into the joint where the shaft that the arm attaches to goes into the caliper. Sometimes this helps, some times it doesn't.

Option 2 is to get a new caliper and install that. They run about $100 USD if you do some looking around. Then replacing it is pretty straight forward. If you have questions about this, let me know.

The last option is more for the mechanically inclined. If you look on e-bay, you can find a rebuild kit for the caliper (costs about $12 USD). You can then rebuild the caliper yourself. The problem area is where the shaft goes through the caliper body. It will build up rust there and cause things to bind. A scotchbrite pad and a little bit of time and all will be good. Just make sure to pack that joint with some high temp bearing grease to help keep water out of it in the future. The other key tidbit you need to know is in order to get out the piston, you need a 14mm pentasocket (yes, a 5 pointed socket). These are available but requires a little bit of looking to find. I got mine on e-bay.

Since you don't mention any ABS lights or other warning lights, I think your ABS system is functioning like it should. If in doubt, get into your car and turn the key ot the RUN position (do not start the car). Did the ABS light come on for a few seconds and then go out. If yes, then the ABS system most likely is just fine. If you don't see the light, then you have atleast a bulb issue in the instrument cluster. This is where getting codes read will tell us a lot more. You will specificially be looking for either a C1165 or C1175 code based on what you are describing. But, list all the codes that you get and we can sort through things from there.
