Default Tales from the ghetto gutter workshop,my MK VII build thread

Ok,the beginning,genesis.

This thread will be long, and pic heavy.

First, some history..The ghetto gutter workshop is the street outside my home, incorporating my front lawn .Me and my missus have been building cars out there for the last 13 years..Rain,sun,snow...we have been out there working in all weather...mechanicals,engine swaps,bodywork..I take over my dads shed occasionally for paint though.

This build is starting at the end of an era...The ghetto gutter workshop will be no more shortly..after many years of battling away,we are now in a position to dig out our backyard, and build a decent shed .
So all of you will be lucky enough to go through the transition with me .

Now,moving on to the vehicle....Its a 1953 Mark 7 automatic, australian delivered.I havnt done too much yet,Ive started refurbishing some of the timber inside the vehicle..I didn't want to "restore" the timber as such,I like the patina.
So,Ive been rubbing it back with 00 grade steel wool and metho to remove the old finish, and reapplying garnet grade Shellac...everything is coming up nice

Now,as some as you know from my previous threads,I havnt fired it up yet...I removed the distributer yesterday,my new points and condensor should be here in a couple of days. So,tomorrow ill be pulling apart and cleaning my distributer, and closely inspecting my oiling system...ive wound it over on the starter motor a lot,but oil pressure gauge isnt moving...pics to come...

Yea,im in tasmania .
Annnnd, unfortunatly, there hasnt been as much progress as I would have liked.
I got points and condenser, fixed a broken wire in dizzy, reinstalled, and got spark.

Theeeeen,it was the fuel systems turn to give me the *****...Long story short, ended up unclogging the fuel lines with compressed air, pulled carbs off, stripped them down, cleaned them all out, refitted them...and left the little valve out of the starter carb to intake manifold pipe...so,unbolted starter carb, refitted valve, then buggered a fibro washer on the banjo bolt for starter carb. That will teach me for trying to take shortcuts :P.

Soooo, need to pull carbs back off, refit starter carb, replace the broken fibro washer and tighten everything down on the bench before refitting again .Then it should go .

while I was at it I bought 20 litres of penrite 20w60,and ordered a new felt oil filter...ill replace the oil before I fire it

Smile Air filter

Hi, I am a Tassie resident as well (Hobart), doing up a Mark7M. Has been sitting around for about 7 years, but I have finally made a start on it. During that 7 years I have been buying bits and pieces for her, that were missing or not original. One of those was the Vokes air cleaner / silencer. The one that I finally sourced has one bracket damaged, and the other removed. So, noticing the photo of your girl's engine bay, I am wondering whether you can help me out with a few things: (1) photos & dimensions of the brackets on yours so I can get mine re-fabricated and (2) photos of how it is secured to engine / inlet manifold. Any help greatly appreciated
