MKII Light upgrades /mods
Hi Forum
(Jag MK II 1963 RHD 3.4 Auto)
looking at upgrading headlights on the jag- and some guides:
FOG/DRIVING LIGHTS
(fog/driving lights are 5"?)
1. Mesh grille protectors where may I find some
2. upgrade options (not a lot of fog- but some very dark roads)
Headlights
1. upgrades - can the bulb be replaced with something brighter (LED?)
2. other options - LED replacement - but similar look (not terminator look)
this is to suit safer driving- rather than original (my dads eyesight no so good these days)

the MK-2 factory "Fog Rangers" were 4½" inches diameter.
the S type "Fog Rangers" were 5¼" inches. { the S type has bigger auxiliary light buckets }.
you can use PAR aircraft landing spotlights for the MK2 fog lights buckets, and by cutting off the "horn grille" toothed area and using the horn grille as a frame. Get them where they sell aircraft lights, such as Aircraft Spruce
GENERAL ELECTRIC GE Q4632 QUARTZ HALOGEN AIRCRAFT LAMP from Aircraft Spruce
I have a pair of those but the horn grilles are the larger S type grilles.

The Lucas Fog Rangers also had a dished mounting plate behind the actual lamp. This dish, (with the same profile as the back of the lamp), fitted into the bowl in the wing, and allowed the light unit to be adjusted for aim. Look at Item 70 on this drawing: -
SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist
As you will see on the SNG Barratt website, all the bits to fit Fog Rangers are available. I always think it's best to put on what Jaguar originally fitted, although I agree it would cost a fair amount !
As for headlamps, if you can get the ones with a separate bulb, you can fit later quartz-halogen, or even LED units that have been manufactured to fit. Remember that there is no headlamp relay on the Mark 2, so all the amps go through the switch. So check amperages carefully and insert a relay if necessary

A rewire with modern relays being triggered by the original wiring for the headlights would provide a much more stable and powerful 12V source for brighter lights.
Clean earths and a modern electrical system with an IR alternator and negative earth, rather than a generator, will also provide a decent increase too.

For safer driving I highly recommend to go with the Vision X 7" LED
https://www.headlightrevolution.com/...-low-high-halo
I used these along with their relay kit so on high beam all five elements are on and these lights are so far superior to any standard 7" headlight plus they draw so little amps which is great for the crappie Lucas electrical.
