Default Torque setting

Hi Team
Could anyone tell me what the torque figures should be for fitting the sump on a MK2 . It's an alloy sump so don't want to crack it.

Damned if I can find that setting, sure I've see it somewhere!

The XJ6 manual has a comprehensive list of torque settings (pp. 06-1 to 06-4) but nothing on the engine sump. I would offer to suggest 10-13 lb/ft which is what they quote for the auto transmission oil pan which I think is also alloy. I think the order of tightening is important, i.e. work from the centre bolts towards the ends, same method as the cylinder head. Cheers & beers

I agree with Peter, there is no specific torque setting for the 26 bolts of the oil sump in the 3.4 and 3.8 engines, regardless of the model car. A 3.4 and a 3.8 are the same engine whether on a MK-9, S type, or MK-2.

there is however, a short bolt which goes only on the front left-side of the sump if you are standing in front of the car.

I just spent time looking thru manuals from 1948-1992 for sump torques. None. Make sure pan and sump have smooth surfaces, good gasket and sealer, tighten until gasket/sealer starts to expand. Check regularly for seepage and retighten on maintenance schedules.
