Default Can some one tell me the purpose of this relay? 4.2L Non R

I'm trying to figure out what this is. I assume that it is a relay of some sort.

It is attached to the bracket that holds the engine cover up on the 2003 4.2L S-type sport.

Can someone confirm that and tell me it's purpose? Is it necessary or can it be bypassed? is the bracket that is embedded in the black box serve as a ground? I'm wanting to relocate it or get rid of it if possible.

That's a tough one! Do you have the JTIS and the JPEC? That will be the best way to find it. I have never seen that before.

Why do you want to get rid of it?

Looks like an aftermarket alarm sensor. If the "box" senses the hood open while armed it goes off.....

that sounds odd. If it is I wouldn't think that it would be wired into the existing wire harness. It looks like it was designed for the car. Shiny bracket that is attached to the little black box has a tab that fits and is almost molded to the back side of the bracket. This shiny piece is my concern. I'm needing to know if it is a ground of some sort. If I have to keep it for what ever reason I would like to cut it off when I relocate this sensor.

Just to reiterate the black bracket that it is mounted to holds up the plastic engine cover. on the passenger side of the motor. It is wired into the wire loom that has the fuel injector plugs.

I stand corrected... Not enough coffee in the morning. I mistook "engine cover" to mean the hood. Your additional pictures explained it better. My Bad...

Six Rotor's answer is a better fit.....

The black metal bracket looks OE..................



..............but that cut convoluted wiring harness sheathing with the cables routed back in (circled in red) and the poorly applied black insulation tape suggests aftermarket tinkering.

Assuming the car hasn't seen service in Afghanistan I'd say it's a suppressor capacitor someone's grafted on.
It seems to be a two wire device. What do the markings visible but not readable in your first post say?

It is a factory device and is fitted to mmy 2004 S-type 4.2---and the harness is just as crappy!

I think it is the ignition capacitor.See S-Type Electrical Guide,Fig 03.3 and 03.4.

When these capacitors fail it will disable the ignition (short-to-earth).

We had one in the shop and it took a while to figure out why NO IGNITION!!!!

The wire harness was all original. I removed all the harness sheathing because is was cracking and brittle. Then put some tape around the wires to hold things in place until I decide how I'm going to re-wrap the wires. So in short they were not tampered with.

Seeing as though it is a two wire device, does it ground back through the harness? can I cut off the bracket that goes to the box and re locate it?

See elec diagram - probably the one already posted. A cap is naturally a 2-wire device but it may also have a ground if the case is metal, though I think you said it's plastic. Try not to lengthen its wiring or you may render it inoperative or poorly operating.

Well it is plastic molded around the piece of metal that mounts it to the bracket.
