Default S TYPE engine modifications

Hey there. I recently traded my 05 x type and got an 03 s type r. I want to upgrade the engine output of 390 hp to maybe 430- 450 hp. Does you have an idea what mods i can put in? i was thinking about getting the supercharger pulley and mina exhaust system, after which i may take it for dyno tuning. If you have any further suggestions please let me know.

Welcome goriv! I also made the switch from a 2002 X-Type 3.0 to an 03 STR. As for mods you may begin with a flat panel K&N air filter, which leads to the modded air intake tube, pop on a 1.5 or 3 lb pulley, remove decorative engine cover to allow heat to escape, replace the stock cats with a pair of Magnaflow's 50 state legal or 49 states hi-flow catalytic converters, replace the stock center resonator with Magnaflow's Tru-X dual inlet/outlet center resonator muffler, dump it all out of stock or aftermarket muffers. Maintain the stock 2.25" diameter for each exhaust component. Your 399 chp STR should churn out an estimated 440 chp. You may earn an est. 30 hp and cooler air intake charge by sending the blower with pulley to Stiegmier Performance for a port/polish and fit pulley, and install a "Chiller Killer" (A/C enhanced intercooling) to maintain low temperature intake charge. They'll recommend a blower rebuild if she doesn't meet spec. With the above you're Butt Dyno will notice a much greater push-back in the seat feeling (est. 470 chp @ 490 lb/ft torque) from start and through the midrange.

I am glad to hear you want to join the club of modding your STR. Your first option is moving on to another car because the aftermarket for our cars is down right lousy, but you have a few options for mild bolt ons. All STR's are 400hp, dont sweat the car mags.

For aftermarket mods there are three main options you can install for 40-50bhp, the minimum is you must install any two of the three listed below:

1) Intake Elbow - Qwiketz Elbow, go ahead and PM the forum member Qwiketz because he custom made 20 or so intake elbows for sale (check the for sale section). I think there might be two or three left and only cost $220.00. This mod takes about one hour to install, gives you a loud supercharger sound under mild and WOT which sounds GLORIUS, and gives you a solid 15rwhp throughout the RPM range. Couple this mod with a K&N filter and the airbox panel delete.

2) High Flow Cats- Magnaflow makes high flow catalytic convertors that fit our cars with the help a very good welder. Two of these should be around $150-$200 and the install should be another $100-$200 or so. This mod should give a solid 10rwhp and an increase in throttle response and "Growl" from the motor with the stock exhaust.

3) 1.5lb Pulley - Mina Gallery (minagallery.com) makes a smaller pulley which makes the supercharger spin more per revolution of the motor, giving the motor more boost. Per the website this gives 12-15rwhp for $300 (e-mail him directly for a cheaper price). Add another $250-$300 for install.

Any of the above two options should give your 40-50 bhp and hopfully knocking on the door of mid 12's in the 1/4.

IMHOP, rasputin laid it out very well. Don't ignore a blower port/polish ($500, est. 20+ hp) and a "Chiller Killer" (maintains a cool intercooler circuit by useing the A/C to super cool the intercooler coolant ($600). The Eaton s/c shortcoming is heat buidup. The ECU will pull back timing and dump fuel to save the motor.

The first thing to do is no mods but instead dyno it. Some people have had a shock but found what to fix before starting the mods.

Before you start tuning you need to know if your car is already up to par as Jagv8 mentioned, and you also need to learn the results from the dyno itself. Only then you should do mods and check them again on the same dyno.

Unfortunately most will only find out the true value of a before run after they have done mods and have dyno results which show something different as expected, so you are warned.

Here is a little but more to be found on which dyno to use and also how to use it:
