RE: New 2000 Jaguar S-Type 4.0 V8 Owner w/ every possible question in the book!
So I got the coils replaced. The 3 bad ones only and new spark plugs. HUGE HUGE difference in the ride now that nothing is misfiring. Still have the check engine light on. Will have to figure that out sooner or later. I'm doing this all in steps but I believe the next I need to do is replace all 4 rotors and back set of brake pads.
I notice after long trips I believe their to be a funky smell..not sure if its gas or oil? is that common?

Cam cover gaskets probably leaking. That or oil pan gasket....or both. Could be coolant. lol. Could be a lot of things. Hard to smell through computer.
Get car scanned for codes too and post so we can help with that part of your problem. Autozone can read them.

call and I will walk u through
I am working oon a S type 4.0 right now that came in with the same set of problems and I can tell you the coils need to be change immediately once the care starts to misfire also you need to check for cracks and leaks in the lines an on the left side first injector check and make sure the connector plug is not off.
You can call me and I will walk you through the only thing ids you have to have a bit of patients .

Okay..as the title states..I am a new owner of a 2000 jaguar v8 4.0 S-Type .
Beautiful looking machine..Just need to get it running and feeling properly. Heres a list of things that were stated from the previous owner that needed to be checked:
a) coils need to be replaced
b) heater needs sensor (i have no clue)
c) front rotors need to be replaced at "some point"
Here's what I found out...
a) a/c does not work (fans dont even kick it. made a short quick whizz noise then absolutely nothing)
b) heater doesnt work either
c) all rotors were overheated...back wheel bolt was broken in half
d) all brake pads are worn
e) sputtering engine feel..aka "the dreaded misfire".
Too scared to floor it even moderately because of the hiccups/misfire.
f) check engine light comes on every now and then
I just want to get this car running properly so I can focus on all the fun stuff.
The estimate to completely redo all the brakes was 1209.00 ... seems a bit outrageous but not sure. This was coming from a local discount tire shop and they said the price was hiked due to the harsh condition of the rotors (all 4 overheated).
I'm really scared to find out all the "hidden/unexpected surprises within the engine portion as well..
Does anyone know of any reliable jaguar/knowledgeable mechanics in the Los Angeles area?
What are the initial steps I should take to get everything checked out properly in terms of seeing what is wrong with the car? (which I should have clearly done before purchasing)
The car came with aftermarket rims. (MHT 20"). Tire spec is 225-35-20. I really admire the look but am wondering what classifies performance as well as the look? Anyone here riding on 20" rims without rubbing? Is arch rolling bad for your vehicle?
Thanks guys..hope to be getting this thing up to par fairly soon. Sorry for the novel/20 question interrogation! lol

I changed my valve covers and seals because of oil leaks. The upper chain tensioners should also should be changed out for the metal ones. The thermostat housing may be plastic as with the water pump blades and both should be changed out for the metal replacement parts. Your shifter block is white plastic and they sell a metal replacement because the white plastic is breakable. Use lots of white grease on the new one or it well bind up. Check the Internet because it all can be DYI,WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS.Good luck!

Don't forget to check and change the cabin air filter. You'll have much better smelling air. As far as the gas smell or oil smell, that could be a bunch of things. I replaced a Valve-Electronic Vacuum Regulator which apparently the valve was stuck open causing a smell of gas in the engine area. Seemed to fix the heavy gas smell after a hard start. The problem is that that issue didn't solve the hard start.
