Rattling sound during idle around flywheel area
I have a 2000 s type 4.0 I just recently purchased. I noticed that during idle it sounds like the flywheel is rubbing something. When I rev it to higher rpms the sound goes away. I also noticed that through the opening the fly wheel looks a little rusted due to it sitting before I bought it. I have put about 1500 miles on it and the sound hasn't gotten better or worse. Could it be the torque converter if its just idling or is there something else? Also is it a sealed transmission because I can't check the tranny fluid to see if it has enough. I don't want to have to move the tranny off if I don't have too. Please help oink me in the right direction.

Just be very careful here!!!
If you don't know Jaguars you have a car that needs the timing chain tensioners replaced. If not they will fail and destroy the engine. I have never heard of the problem you describe.
So do you know if they have been changed? The sound you describe could be the ratting of the timing chains because they are loose. When you rev the motor the noise does not go away but you can't hear it over all the other noises.
After you figure this out then yes. I would do a transmission full service. Drop pan, change filter and fluid. Don't let anyone charge you a lot for this as the car has a Ford 5 speed automatic which has been installed in millions of Fords. Dead common unit.

I could be wrong, but I think you have a mercedez benz transmission as in the supercharger xk models. Be careful what fluid you use and call jaguar they will let you know what fluid you should be using.
I'd have to agree with the timing chain being the culprit of this noise.
Does the noise continue when the engine is warm and idling?

ddyke, as others suggest: As a precautionary, service the trans. with new filter and fluid. Check catalytic converters for loose heatshield or decaying innards, causing them to rattle during idle. Check timing chain tensioners. They may have already been swapped with the updated metal tensioners.

He is long gone as is the car!!
The Ford 5 speed does not have much if any TC problems. You will read about them on this forum but that is for the later S Types that have the ZF 6 Speed. That transmission has a known problem with the lock up friction material failing and it usually sets a code.
You have the 6 cylinder so you are good with the timing tensioner stuff.
Maybe a dust shield rubbing?

Make sure the bolts to the TQ to flex plate and crank are nice and tight...
Missing tooth or the starter gear touching the flex plate could e the culptret of the noise...
I had this issue on my 95 Trans Am... the only difference is the noise is not symmetrical and does not dissappear when the rev's are increased.
