Default Sunglass Compartment Latch - how to remove?

I want to replace the latch for the sunglass compartment on an 03 S-Type (not the XJ8 that's in my signature!) -- what's the removal procedure? I've looked at it and can't see an easy way to pop it out and didn't want to force anything.

Thanks.

I was in the same position as you. Im sure your falls down over bumps like mine did. I could never figure out how to replace it, so I just glued it shut.

Mine won't even stay shut when the car is parked.

Gluing it shut seems rather severe.

I found the part on ebay, haven't bought it yet - would rather make sure I can get the old one out first. Also was thinking that maybe I could somehow fix it while it's out. The weather is nicer today, I'll take another look at it.

I stuck a small folded piece of paper in the crack around the sunglass compartment and it stays shut, but it has to be replaced (the paper) if I open it because (duh) it falls out!

Now I'm back on this project. Any advice on how to remove the latch would be helpful. Thanks.

Sorry there Mike like quite a few of us, I also need to repair the sunglass holder but just haven't had the time.

An old friend here JOsworth has the parts, he said he send to me, I guess I will have to take him up on it. More than likely I will tackle this project next month and take a few snap shots along the way, of course.

BTW Joyce is using the folded up paper wedge.

This photo is from an ebay ad for the latch. Apparently, there are little nubs on the side that hold it in place.

I removed the rubber liner in the sunglass compartment but couldn't feel the nubs. Will try again.

I finally got it out by carefully pushing on the side with a small screwdriver, alternating from side to side while pushing out on the back of the latch.

After I got it out, I pushed the mechanism in and it stayed until pushed in again, like it's designed to work. I have no idea why, but it now works fine. I re-installed it and it's like new. I'll keep the paper wedge handy for a while!

Fixed for free!

You could probably sell that paper wedge on eBay. Simply print the word "Jaguar" on it and sell it for 3x's what it's worth.

Default Alternative to XR857259 ? sun glass bin

The below is cup holder console clip for an Australian made Holden Commodore sedan (a General Motors Australia vehicle) which appears to be identical to the Jaguar type. I have ordered a few at $7.50AUD including postage (about $6.00USD), not sure if the seller will post OS but I assume he will. I did notice a few other similar looking clips but not quite the same and they did not specify a country of origin like this seller; likely to be Japanese as there was quite a bit of Japanese content in the vehicles.
if they wont post to you let me know.
If it fits this would be a fraction of the cost of other sellers...

Cheers.

I know this is an old thread, but for further reference, I managed to find one just like it on ebay:

Jaguar issued a TSB for the little latch mechanism a few decades ago.
Here is info we got at the dealer.
Same latch for the ashtray.

You did well, assuming the part fits. Jaguar wants $64.98 for the part:

2003-2009 Jaguar Overhead Console Latch XR857259 | Haper Jaguar Parts (harperjaguar.com)

Obscene pricing, even for Jaguar, IMHO.
