Default What does "gearbox fault" mean?

I had that message pop up on me two days ago on my way to work. I drove it just fine on to work. When I went out for lunch the message was gone. The next morning on my way to work it comes up again and then the little "check engine" symbol lights up. No problems or changes in the sounds of the motor or transmission (at least not yet). Any suggestions or should I just have it hooked up to the diagnostic machine to see?
Thanks

OH, I forgot mine is a 2001 s-type 3.0 with 99500 miles.

It was the torque converter when mine did it, but you should have it checked.
