Default 2000 Jag S-Type - Shifter Issue

I have a 2000 S Type with 4.0. It has the J-gate shifter. When I attempt to shift to "D", the transmission does not shift into gear. I have to move the shifter past "D" and to "4". It will shift into 4th gear, and then I can move the shifter back to "D" and it will shift to drive. Also, the shifter will not move upwards past 4th gear into 3rd gear. I have attempted to adjust the shifter cable to many different positions. This changes the position necessary for engaging drive, but does not resolve the problem and does not allow me to shift to lower gears.

Does anyone have any idea as to the problem? Thanks

Welcome to the forum Wendell,

I've copied your question from your Intro thread to S-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Please install the updated (newer style) selector lever cable offered by Jaguar.

You might get by with just a cable adjustment but the cable is probably stretched.

There are HUNDREDS of TSBs for your car, Please read though them for more info.

Agree it's probably the cable. Replace it.

Thanks for the advice.

I have purchased a new shifter cable and plan to install it tomorrow. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for an easy installation?

Thanks

Thanks again for the advice. I replaced the shifter cable and it shifts perfect now.
