Default Coolant reservoir tank replacment

I'll post a picture but I'm getting some coolant around the edge of my overflow tank on my 2005 S-Type 3.0, not enough to leak on the ground or anything yet. Will I be safe to order one online from Jag bits or should I pony up at the dealer tomorrow? I'd imagine the dealer will be a fortune...

The tank doesnt appear to be cracked, just leaking from around the hose connection FWIW. I'll post a picture in a bit

Yep, mine just started doing this also. It's leaking down past the minimum limit though. 2003 v6 3.0. I've already taken the top hose off. I thought topping it off would do the trick, but didn't help. I'm trying to figure out how to get the bottom hose off and disconnect the electrical cable for the level sensor. My brother's a mechanic but he lives in Virginia. Talked to him on the phone though. He's worked on a few S-Types before. He said the bottom hose has a quick release that can be undone with a flat head screw-driver. The electrical probably has some type of Molex connector, but I'm not worried about disconnecting that one until I get the bottom hose undone. He said he just put a pan under the car to collect coolant that's going to spill. No way around it unless you syphon it. The top plastic nipple on top is where the crack was on mine. When I went to pull the rubber hose off it broke all the way. So I'm pretty sure the nipple was cracked on bottom where I couldn't see it. I'm attempting to fix this myself. Hopefully won't be a problem as the wife and I are suppose to drive to Kentucky this week-end. Would l like to put a guide together when I get time. Let us know how yours goes. My brother suggested CarQuest to find a replacement tank. I haven't called them yet. I'll have to order one online if not.

CarQuest seems to be able to order it for ~$95 but if I can get the OEM one from JagBits.com for $125 I may do that. It's just a matter of weather not I can wait a few days for shipping or suck it up and hit the dealer.

Here's a picture I took of the bottom of the tank. It shows the bottom hose with the quick release and the electrical connector for the level indicator.

Anyone with any other suggestions that have changed this part out?

I'm in the same predicament. I'll have to rent a car until I can get the replacement tank. Then I have to worry if I did the job right on a long trip to Kentucky. Certainly don't want to fry my engine and / or be stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Sorry the photo was taken sideways because I used my phone camera. I should have rotated it before posting.

I should of made a video. I just replaced mine 2 weeks ago. PM me and I'll send you a link to a brand new one for 150 overnighted 125 for standard mail. It was the one I used. I wanted the new one rather then a used one for 25 less. The bottom connection has a small wire clip that holds the fitting on. You have to carefully pull the clip out then the hose will come right off. The coolant you are seeing is coming from the top fitting that points to the left looking down. Like mine it is most likely cracked and just barely having coolant coming out. It dries up to have that look. Its leaking at that fitting if you even graze it it will most likely break. Once you get a new tank and get that clip out carefully it is very easy to replace.

Key is don't lose the clip from the quick-connect. I'd do the quick-connect last, after the elec. connector and if you have the right size vinyl cap laying around (I did) coolant loss will be very minimal....pull the QC and slap your thumb over the tank port (assuming no proper size cap) and you won't lose much. Makes a nice spout for transferring the coolant remaining in your cracked tank into the new one after install. After you install the new tank....make sure you tug on the lower hose quck-connect and wiggle at it to make sure it is properly seated. You won't make it out of the neighborhood without a bunch of steaming stink if you screw that one up so you should be good-to-go ar far as the KY trip.

Dealer charged me $108 for the 3.0L version. Ask for a discount if yours is higher. (He SURELY won't sell it for less if you fork over whatever he's asking)

I replaced the tank myself. After a leak mysteriously appeared after a repair shop replaced my fan belt, I was driving home from work when my coolant temperature lamp came on.

I pulled over and found coolant leaking out from under the small tube. The process was simple, and at Walmart I found the coolant needed: Prestone® QUICK FILL™ Extended Life 50/50 Prediluted Antifreeze/Coolant.

The tank comes with a sensor that connects to a bottom connector. Total time to remove and replace and fill: less that 30 minutes.

The dealer hear says that the pipe is a known issue and even when their techs are told to be careful in that area, the tube is so small and fragile.

Ok got everything off. The level sensor part I got off by turning the white plastic piece counter clock-wise (facing from the front of the car) and then pulled down. The white piece probably detaches from the black piece, but don't want to test that theory (i.e. break it) until I get the replacement. Unless anyone here knows? The other clamp underneath has a C shaped metal wire piece on it. You can probably make it out in my photo. The opening faces the passenger side, so to get it off push towards the drivers side. I hated having some of the coolant pour onto my car and then on the driveway, but didn't have any choice in that matter. Looks like the rest should be easy. To those of you that have done this one before, do I just fill up the reservoir and run the car and then keep refilling until at the full marker, or do I need to do something to get air out of the system? I would run JTIS but I'm on a Mac.

Thanks for all the help so far everybody!

Woops sorry disregard about my comment on price and where I got it from. I was reading to fast and didnt see that you have a 3.0 V6. I was talking about an STR one. The tanks are different the one from jagbits was the same price as the place I got it from but overnighted for the STR. They all leak in that same spot but the tanks are shaped different so you would need that tank you found.

I'm going to call the CarQuest place in Norcross tomorrow morning as it isn't to far for me to go and pick it up if they have it in stock. That way I won't have to wait and pay to overnight it. I'll post back here in case anyone has one of these close by and they do have them in stock. If not I'll just have to order one online. I'm curious though about some of the parts websites listing only the v8 4.0 for some of these parts even though I filled out the pull down menus for a v6 3.0. Are they the same for these two engines?

hmmmm...not looking exactly as I remember.....I'll go out and take a look at my old tank.....

Found it. I removed this one from daughter's 03 about a month ago before she returned to school..wasn't leaking..just figured it was due.
maybe the pics will help you with the connector retention features.

New tank should include sensor and fill-cap.
