What does this mean? NO HEAT!
Took my 03 STR to the dealer the other day because I had no heat and the air kept blowing colder and colder. This is what they found and they want about $1,100 to fix it. Can someone decipher this for me? Can I fix this myself?
"Customer states that temperature control is not working states the heat will not blow until temp is set to 82F check controls and advise - (ok 1 diag). Short in climate switching valve assembly. Inspected and verified concern. Tested switching valve. Advised switching valve needs replaced. Also advised that faulty switching valves have been know to cause internal shorts in the climate control unit and that it may needs replace as well. Recommend starting with valve assembly."
Again, they want about $1,100 to fix this and as they state advised me that the climate control may go out which they say would be another $5,500.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

They are saying it is the DCCV and potentials the CCM both well documented faults on the forum.
You can buy the valve for ~$100 maybe 2-3hrs to change you can do the maths.
The CCM needs any burnt traces bypassed again not a huge job but for 5.5k they are going to install a new one and probably a few champagne cocktails.

Fairly common problem, and would be a very expensive fix if it were not for these people:

In summary, the Dual Climate Control Valve (DCCV) does develop the fault described by the dealer, and if left unattended will cause a fault in the much more expensive climate control module (CCM). As you now know, those parts are costly if ordered through a dealer but, for instance, Jag Climate Control will sell you a DCCV for $150, and can repair the CCM, which burns out because of a design fault which they will also correct.
Have a good look around their website.

As stated above, this is a well documented problem and a search through the forum will yield massive amounts of info on the DCCV / CCM failure issues. And as Robinb states above, the most comprehensive source of off-forum info is definitely...

Norri and Robinb sum it up clearly. Do the search and read as much as you can first.
I found an exact replacement Motorcraft DCCV (made by Bosch) for less than $100 on eBay, then had the Jag dealer install it to be sure it was done right. Saved a boatload of $$ buying it myself (as you can see from earico's post).
If you still have problems after replacing the DCCV, then it's likely that the CCM also is damaged, but the common wisdom is to always replace the DCCV first.
Good luck,
Steve
