Default Gearbox oil and filter change.

Following up on good advice from the forum about replacing the gearbox fluid and filter for reasons of preventative maintenance, I am on the trail of getting the job done. Thje car has done 68k from new and I reckon now is the right time. I do little annual mileage, usually between 6 and 7k miles and I don't thrash the car.
I have seen the videos and know what is involved.

I will not be using a main dealer and will have to find a reasonably priced independent with Jaguar experience.

I cannot afford Jaguar oil. So its a matter of finding suitable alternatives. But I will more than likely buy an OE sump gasket.
Any help on choice of oil will be much appreciated.

First thing is knowing which gearbox you've got. Is it a 5 speed Ford unit or a 6 speed ZF?

BTW- nobody with more brains than money uses the Jag supplied fluid, in either box.

All 2.5s have the ZF.

Get things from Bristol Transmissions, sump, sleeve, etc - they do kits I gather.

OP's sig says he has a 2002, not a 2002.5 so I thought it best to ask.

Its the 6 speed thanks Mikey as JagV8 said.

I had a telephone quote for using the OE fluid and for a OE spec alternative for doing the oil change, no details were given on what else was being changed for the prices quoted.
Using OE Jaguar brand fluid came to almost £700 incl VAT
and OE spec alternative was £530 inlc VAT.
That was from an independent Jaguar specialist.
But as a first quote its a marker to beat.

I would not buy any new Jaguar branded parts or fluids for my car.
I just changed the rear discs and pads on it for £98 all inclusive using Mintex parts. Jaguar part prices don't bare thinking about.

No worries.

It's our weird reg no. (licence plate) - not helped by jag's 2002.5MY meaning jag's MY which itself is rather odd.

I cheated by
1. living here
2. knowing the 2.5 (like the 4.2 NA & STR) came in with 2002.5MY

I don't think someone in England will buy parts from California and have them shipped. It's just maintenance items. I think the shipping would kill the savings. I do buy parts from them though.

Perhaps not, but since that ZF transmission is used in many different BMWs, Rovers, etc., I'm sure that, or a similar, kit is available from distributors in the UK and Europe.

It was just an example of what the person should be searching for.

That sounds a fair price.

The one price I obtained from a local independent using OE spec oil was £530 which I felt straight away was too high considering the parts cost.
But no worries I have other contacts to try.

Thanks pab, yes I've seen quite a few ZF service kits for other car brands with the ZF box for sale in the UK.
I will take my time and decided later.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Great, and it seems that Anthawk has found a distributor in the UK that sounds like they supply pretty much that same kit!

Happy S-Type New Year to everybody.

This is not a recommendation only an FYI on what I do on my transmissions.

For my ZF 6HP26 I order a genuine ZF filter from FCP Euro ( ~$115.00 ) and then use Ford Mercon SP fluid ( Amazon $90 for 12 quarts. ) that is specified for ZF 6HP26 transmissions. I have 150K on Mercon SP in a ZF 6HP26 with no issues. Filter and fluid changed every 50K.
According to Ford Mercon LV has replaced SP. I've just put LV in my wife's BMW 6HP26, so far no issues and the shifts are crisp.

I will have to wait a bit longer to change the gearbox fluid because my car failed its MOT last week so other work to be done.
Nothing major but it failed on three minor items.
MOT is still current so I'm legal for a while.

Geezer,

Your comment regarding Mercon LV replacing Mercon SP is the first I've heard of this. Do you have any information pertaining to how similar the two fluids' specs and composition are?

This came from the Ford dealer who changed the fluid on my Ford Explorer after the transmission cooler leaked.Personally, I will stay with the Mercon SP in my Jag, as that meets the ZF Life Guard 6 specification.

I am trying the LV in the wife's BMW that is a high mileage commuter and if it blows up she get a new car. So far the LV seem to have cleaned up the shifts the were getting a bit sluggish. Time will tell.

From internet searches on SP vs. LV, LV is a fully synthetic fluid for " Life Time" transmissions. It is not compatible with some of the older Ford 5 speed transmission clutch packs.
A friend who has various cars and trucks including a 2008 S-Type and BMW puts Red Line D4 in everything with no apparent problems.
