My fob hasn't been working lately. I thought maybe the battery, but it's only the unlock button that doesn't work all the time. If I did replace the battery, it wouldn't need reprogrammed would it?

No, a battery change is straightforward, give it a good clean and check the switch connections when you have it apart.

I took it apart, battery is fine. But there's some corrosion over the buttons, and the unlock button in particular has a honey-like goo on it and the connection seems loose. I might just buy a new fob on ebay just to be on the safe side. I don't have the valet key or anything for the doors. So if this goes out, I'm locked out.

You can change the membrane switches too. I did not know this until it was posted on the forum. Very inexpensive and they are on EBay.

We had a good informative thread on it too.

Sounds like they are talking about Motorcarman. He has WDS and can program FOB's and do all the dealer-set-up tricks like turn drive-away-locking on or off as you like.

Spraying the switches on the circuit board real good with electronic contact cleaner might be enough to fix your problem.

I went ahead and ordered one on ebay for $35. I tried cleaning the circuit, but the button feels mushy and I have to push real hard to get it to work. A local locksmith said they can program it for $60. I'll have to call the dealership to confirm, but I believe they told me they only charged $45 for the programming.

You can also order the buttons on eBay if you want to try to replace them.

Thanks for the info on Central Lock & Key. I was in the process of trying to locate a smith that can do this and you just saved me a lot of time!

QUOTE=YoungRobertL;591487]Had quite the experience replacing a key that was stolen from my 1998 XJ8. Finally bought the cut key from the Jag dealer in Tacoma, WA. Then had to have my car towed to a local shop that works on Jags (there is no Jag dealer in Yakima, WA). The shop programmed my key and remote & both work just fine. $135 for key & cutting, $130 for programming.[/QUOTE]
