I have a few very small abrasions on my front seats- no actual tears, but it has taken the top layer of the leather off and leaves the brown color underneath. not is not much worse than the discoloration that happens on the drivers side from sliding in and out of the car.

I have no doubt that one the DIY repair kits would work fine. My problem is trying to match.

My trim code is SEL and on some sites I get a direct translation to Barley and in photographs the "Barley" looks just like mine, but the champagne also looks like mine. I am not sure if there was a model change and therefore color name change, but be that a it may.

Several questions

The SEL seems to get lost in color charts online- for example one place IO have gone

shows barley that looks considerable darker than what i have and they use numbers vs. the trim codes and I have found no conversion chart.

Below are 2 cars- one interior color is called Barley and the other is Champagne and is there a difference?

Just for your interest, I have the normal chrome peeling on the door locks in the front doors (inside of my car. There is even a TSB out about it. Called the Jag dealer and they wanted (please sit down) $174.00 a piece for them. It must of cost $3 to make- sad business. Any place online to find them at better rates.

Thanks for your help. You folks are generally right on. If there is a mobile leather repair or shop that stands out in Dallas that would be super, but i just don't want to send the car off for week to get something like this taken care of.

If your trim is stated as SEL on the car's plate you should be able to trust it.

Unless everyone correctly adjusts their web sites and browsers to show colours properly - which hasn't happened and IMO won't happen - you can't go by eye on the net / your PC (or phone etc).

hmm, what a mess. I understood SEL to be barley but now I too wonder!! Ask a dealer?

Barley and Champagne are in fact the same color. Jaguar changed the name, but trim code stayed the same, SEL. As far as number code, Jaguar only uses the letter system SEL.

Hi Tom; I was wondering did you ever get the color matcged correctly? I'm now going through this same thing; I called the dealer,& he too was a bit confused, as my car says Champagne, but also says Barley & have the SEL code, but the colors on the sites just seem different altogether...

Btw, & I'll do it the correct way & intro myself in the forum, but this is my 1st post, so hello to all in this particular thread!..

 

The dealer can print off very detailed build info that includes each of the colours of various parts. Maybe they are a bit backward at knowing that they can do that...

 

Thanks for the reply; I'll look into that. It is certainly confusing to say the least; when I spoke to the parts dealer, he even said that it showed mocha, but I'm assuming that has to be the carpet. Just saying that to say, he was extremely as lost as myself...

 

Regarding your chrome peeling on the interior door lock button: My drivers door lock button suffered from this issue a few years ago. Keep in mind that those buttons are not metal, they are chrome-covered plastic. Most owners wind up breaking the tabs off the button if they attempt to remove them from the surround piece in order to repair or replace them. If you break those tabs, you wind up having to purchase the entire surround assembly since the door lock buttons are not sold separately. Very expensive....

What I did as a "temporary repair" was to take a six-inch-long strip of silver metal foil tape from a roll of the stuff that my neighbor had. I cut a piece to the approximate shape but somewhat larger than the button, then carefully applied it over the surface of the button and gradually worked it down over all the sharp edges. It is not as smooth as the original chromed surface, but it looks okay and it solved the problem of sliced-up fingers when reaching for that button. This temporary repair may wind up serving as permanent since I've never revisited the issue once the sharp edges problem was cured....

If you do this, take your time and don't rush it. Go slowly, start from the center of the button, and work the edges around the corners until you are satisfied with the coverage and the look. If you don't succeed on the first attempt, pull the foil tape off using needlenose pliers, throw it away, cut a new piece, and do it again. You'll get better with each attempt as you learn where to start and how to manipulate the edges....

 

I've just recoloured a front seat using a kit from The Furniture Clinic - the results were excellent

 

No. I can get my red paint with no problem, but the other one is quite hard with gamma differences on the computer and like. I have just set on it for a touch.

Other than take the seat covers off- does everyone else have problem on the s-types with cloth part of the leather that is on the lower backing corners and how is wears out due to getting in and out of the car. Any other solutions that someone has?

How close to orginal or was it orginal. I wish these sellers would list thweir products with the actual color codes from the car manufacturers, but then I am looking for logic in the auto world- dumb me!!!!

Ha! Right!!! Thing is, they have the codes, but if course the colors themselves don't look nearly the same; I think that they do match though; our problem more so, is the whole "Champagne/Barley thing, & not knowing what to actually get in that regard; we'd almost have to get it & actually "try it out" to know whether it's a match or not :-\

 

It appears to me and I stand to be wrong here, that Jag used the same color code(SEL) for both and depending on the year it has a slight color change. just an opinion that would make sense out of these color mismatches. I still do not think they are the exact same color with just different names.

Yeah, I actually contacted 2 of the companies listed in here (furniture clinic & magic mender) & they too said that they are the same color with a name change; I agree with you on the look of the colors though...

 

Thjey just need to send samples. Wait until you try and match the carpet mats. Even the photos might show correct and they will call it mocha, but that is not what I get. i got a number of swatches and non of them were close. Finally got mat that were a little different in color, but looked right in contrast.

Ivory - NED. Unfortunately, now the recoloured seat makes the other front one look crap!

 

I have used JAGUAR - IVORY Leather Color TOUCH UP KITS - XJ8/XK8/X-TYPE/S-TYPE - code NED seatsrestore on eBay. It work well. I just put it on to see if it match and it was close. You need to take in account the sun fading and grime deep in the leather grain. A month later, i can't tell where i applied the touch up vs the regular seat. I am going to do a second treatment later and get the rest of the product to do a professional job. I need to purchase the crack filler and sealer.
