manual transmission swap?

Nope. The V6 has a different bellhousing pattern to the V8. And in any case the Getrag used behind the V6 would not handle the power, well maybe for the first 5 minutes but that's all..
There is a six-speed manual that will bolt straight up to the AJ-V8, the ZF S6-53 that was used in the 2.7L diesel S-Type, but that was never sold in America, and the gearboxes are getting hard to find even in the UK & Europe. The length of the gearbox is the same as the ZF 6HP26 and the output flange is the same, so the standard propshaft would bolt straight up.
To make this work you would need a custom made flywheel and clutch (the dual-mass from the diesel would not bolt straight in, my understanding is that the flange on the back of the crank is different between the 2.7 and the AJ-V8).
The manual pedal box and shifter from the diesel would work, but again it's a matter of finding them...
Last challenge is programming the car that it will work as a manual. Nobody has done this yet, in principle it might be possible to reprogram it (given the recent developments in cracking the PCM in these cars) but it would be quite a project.
Rough estimate on the back of a cigarette packet.
$3000 for a used gearbox with shipping from the UK
$1000 for the pedal box
$500 for the hydraulics
$3000 for a clutch & flywheel
$500 for the shifter
$500 for random stuff
$1000 for the programming
Maybe ten grand not including labour. How much is the STR worth?

"Maybe ten grand not including labour. How much is the STR worth?"
yeah, figured that would be the answer, just pipe dreaming. This is my first time out with a car that is ecu bound. did a trans swap with the '75 XJ12C, dumping the BW slusher for a 4 spd and laycock OD but of course that was just nuts and bolts. has anyone had luck with recurving the ZF to give a more zippy performance or is it a matter of hardware and software? i get that common modern cars are just about engineered to the max of their physical limits, then dumbed down with software to keep people from killing themselves, thus the need for tuning. i've just got morbid curiosity more than actual need.

There are no transmission tuning possibilities for the ZF in the 2003-2005 cars, they run the 1st generation TCM which is less than half the memory capacity of the TCM in the later cars, and is not the same as the ones used in the Fords, BMW's, etc which can be tuned. There is nothing that can be done with them, and little prospect of doing anything with them in the future.

I've been wandering the net looking at some older 5 speed manual V6 with AWD (all wheel drive) Talk about CHEEEEEP. 101-130K on the cars for 2000-3200. 2002-2004. check it out in your area. You could buy one at that price to drive part time when shifting is fun.

that's what got me thinking. saw a fair condition one in phoenix for $2300. how many cars is too many?! uh let me think . . . .

The flex plate is the jaguar one, obviously only used to start the car. Clutch will use the standard s type concentric slave. Flywheel is very well made. Clutch is good for about 500bhp, let's hope the gearbox lasts !!
Where are you plums ?

Going to use Emerald K6 ecu. Runs off the jaguar sensor, but need a manual throttle body.
The emerald will run vvt, I believe it has CAN capabilities but not needed for my project.

Fun thread! Over the past couple of weeks I have been going through the exercise of looking into putting a manual on an AJ-V8. Cambo has summed it up pretty well, but I am looking into what it would take to put 700 to 800 HP through a trans. In my planning, I'd use a Tremec Magnum XL 6 speed. About $4K new. I am hoping to find one of the coveted manual trans for a decent price, so I could use the bell housing. There are a couple of companies that will custom cast or machine bell housings. $1,500 to $2,500. In my case, since the flywheel has to be around 13.5" diameter for the 134 tooth starter ring, I'll have to go with a custom multi plate clutch. Cost for a custom flywheel could be as high as $1500, and the clutch is close to $2K.
If I did a manual trans build, it would cost closer to $12K. What's another 12K to support an engine that costs $13K to rebuild! If this develops, then forget the Jaguar electronics and go with an aftermarket controller. Another $3K.
$30K+- for 800+ HP running gear, what a deal! cheaper than buying a new car...

you guys are way out of my league . . .but if you've never seen this youtube vid of tom walkinshaw at Mt Panorama Bathurst in 1985 you're in for a treat. then hang around for the 20 min race vid. and watch him smoke a bimmer.

Me ? 3.54 non limited Lsd. The Jag lsd is a bit lazy, better to let the wheels spin a bit, but once the 10inch wide slicks are warm you will struggle to spin the wheels.

doing same sort of thing,
4.2 v8 na,6 speed manual box made the flywheel,for less than £500,
and going to run a stand along,
and drop it in a mk2 jag,
got a 2.88 diff in my ha4 axel,with lsd,
