Default Pinion Seal Leak?

Back from 120 mile road trip, after a wash i decided to look under the car. Noticed oil splatters on the exhaust pipe and oil dripping from the rear diff. Looks like it is seeping out of the driver side axel where the axel meet the differential. My guess is the pinion seal but not 100% sure. Can anyone determine the leak from the pictures? Any info would be appreciated..only had the car 1 month. It has 77,000 miles.

Never seen it before and have not heard of it but you are right! It's the axle shaft seal. Many cars with more miles and no problem so lets hope it's just one of those things.

Looks like the output shaft seal. The pinion seal is where the driveshaft goes into the diff.

Ok, i was looking at a parts diagram, thanks for the correction. I know a mechanic and i will ask him tomorrow what it would take to fix this in my garage.

Its not too bad, pull the axle and the seal is exposed. Pop it off (likely won't come off easily), clean the area up, put the new seal on and make sure the diff fluid is full.

Nope, but I've replaced many output shaft seals on various vehicles.

okStypeR, I would also be sure to make sure the breather tube isn't clogged. If it is, it can lead to more leaks as the pressure buildup needs to release somewhere. Maybe your leak is actually from the breather tube and you can get off easy?

^^

Clear the breather first, top off and see if the leak goes away.

Clearing the breather has "cured" many seal leaks on JF.

Thanks for the input guys, you are right, I should start off with the easy fix first and move from there. I will put it back up on the ramps and take a look. Assume there is a small valve with a tube attached at the topof the diff? I did buy 2 axle shaft seals from Gaudin Jaguar yesterday, only 9.70 each. I bought 2 in case i mess one up during the install. Waiting of some rear diff fluid too. I will keep you posted on the progress, and if it comes to replacing the axle shaft, i will attempt to document the process with pictures (not making promises) once the hands get greasy the last thing i want to pick up is my camera.

Do you know where the vent is? It's not that obvious and a lot of cars don't have a hose attached to it so it's kind of invisible.

We had a pretty in depth discussion with pictures and diagrams here:

Got under the car again today and more fluid has leaked out from the output shaft seal so i will be replacing it next week. As far as breather valve...i guess i will have to get a small mirror and look around for the breather valve. Even if it was clogged I'm not sure i could fix it! Very tight up there...has anyone on here done this before? Glad this is not my daily driver...

Just wanted to update you guys on the output shaft seal repair. I managed to remove the rotor, calipers, sway bar links, etc in order to remove the axle and replace the output shaft seal. Once everything is free, the drive shaft will not release from the rear diff., there is a keeper pin or c clamp holding the drive shaft in place. At this point i did not want to go any further with the drive shaft removal. I put it all back together and with parts in hand, drove to Jaguar of Tulsa and let them repair the car. Using my own parts (2 output shaft seals) they replaced both seals for $316.00. I was expecting more so it was a nice suprise.

You have to "pop" the axles out just like on a FWD car.
Here is the slide hammer tool you need. I think you can get a free loaner at AutoZone.
