Hi there. I have a 2000 S-Type 4.0 that started acting up today. Rough at idle, bucks fiercely at around 40 in top gear, mash the throttle though and she seems fine. No CEL or other warnings.

I run an OBDLink with Torque on my android device. No ECU error codes. Ran a systems test, and the only failing code that came back was "TID: $53 CID: $04," which was way out of spec.

Any idea what this code means? Thanks in advance.

Ignore mode 6.

Look at fuel trims (see old threads).

Have you changed the timing chain tensioners?

I bought the car three years ago with 80K miles, now 107K. I did not replace the tensioners. Is there any way to tell if this has been done prior to my acquisition of the vehicle?

They will not have been done and will write off the engine at some random point if ignored.

Ignore that TID stuff.

 

You can check but you need to pull one cam cover.

The new tensioners have a metal body and the plastic should be white.
The old bad ones will be a orange/red color from time and decay.

Are you sure the engine has not jumped time? If you are lucky this will happen before the engine is destroyed. So be sure and inspect them closely!

Have the coils and plugs been changed? If you are lucky again you might just need to replace them if the tensioners are updated.

Thanks for the guidance. I will pull a cam cover and see if the tensioners have been upgraded. I have put 24 miles on the car since the issue began and I parked it with the intention of diagnosing prior to restarting the engine.

I thought that tensioner issues caused noise, when I pulled in the driveway and got under the bonnet I noticed no unusual sounds from the front of the engine. Just some shaking from the irregular misfiring. Never occurred to me that this might be the problem. I'll get the cover off this weekend and have a look, and count myself among God's favored if it is bad tensioners and the engine survived. Thanks!!

 

That is a good sign. Tensioners usually "rattle" so maybe all you need is some coil and plug work.
But inspect to be sure. Hate to see you lose the engine.

I forgot but do you know how to tell if it's in time or not?

The easy way is to use the factory alignment flats on the cam shafts. You will have the cam cover off anyway so I would check it.

The flats on both cams must be facing the same way and it's easier to check this if they are positioned with the flats on top of the cam.

Well, the problem was indeed the upper tensioners. One essentially dissolved, and the cam jumped time. Thanking my lucky stars I didn't have to eat a motor. New tensioners installed, running fine again. Left the job to a jag pro, it hurt to write the check but happy it's back in order again.

 

Glad you got it sorted. I just replaced the valve covers on my '01 S-type. I wish I'd known about replacing the tensioners since I was already down in there. My motor only has 47k miles so hopefully it can wait a bit.

 

Did you do just the easy to get at secondary ones?

All 4 need to be changed along with the guide rails and the timing chains them selves. Yes the secondary does tend to fail first but they are all the same age and have seen the same miles.
