Default Transmission flush..

I thought I read on this forum before that the transmission case is sealed on the Jaguar S Types- if that is true would you still be able to do a Trans flush and add an additive? The reason I ask is because I took my 04' S Type in for service because my trans was making a noise in between shifting and I was told it was a Trans Squak and it needed a Trans Flush and have an additive added to it. I just want to make sure that this is correct info- I just keep thinking back to the sealed trans thing.... Also want to make sure my trans is ok because my warranty is up Jan of next year.

Hi Uptown Girl,

The transmission case is not sealed, but changing or adding fluid is not something for a casual mechanic in that some special equipment is required if I recall. A complete transmission fluid change runs somewhere more than $600 because of the high cost of the fluid and the involved procedure. I would check with your dealer to make sure your warranty covers the cost of the Trans flush. Also, ask if your car had the J004 re-flash on the transmission and ECU. I believe Jaguar recommends the fluid change at around 75,000 or 80,000 miles or so, but check with your dealer or a Jaguar technician to confirm.

Good luck,

Mike

Thanks for the info! No my warranty does not cover that but they quoted me $260.00 for a Trans Flush and to have some kind of additive added to it. They said it won't hurt the car if i don't do it - but it will continue to make the noise until I do. I don't mind either way just as long as I know that my trans is good and is not going out on me! If that was the case I would want to know before my warranty ran out!

Hi Uptown Girl,

You may want to approach this in stages. First, get the J004 recall re-flash applied and see if that helps. Next, then if either the re-flash has already been applied or when you do have it done and it still doesn't work, then consider the Trans Flush. Like you said, if it won't hurt anything and it doesn't really bother you, then just leave things as is.

Hi Carelm- can you tell me what the J004 recall re-flash is?

I have a 2002 S Type 4.0 and one of my clients has a tranny shop. He serviced it no problem! He says that the "sealed for life" thing is a load of crap. The funny thing is, he referenced the tranny filter and it is a crappy old paper filter off a Lincoln LS! He says the least Jag could have done was use a mesh one! Replaced the fluid with the high end Mercon V. Job ran a few hours and cost about $380

Ummm..ZF makes the trans, not Jag. The same trans appears in other high end cars like BMW's... Strange thing is I was unaware that the LS got the ZF after 03's update. It was a 5 speed in the Lincoln and a 6 speed in the Jaguar. Up through 02 both the LS and Jaguar shared the Ford 5 speed auto.

i was told by a service tech that i trust, that my tranny is sealed and he did not have the correct materials to do the job himself. This was before i had the torque converter replaced so it is a nill point now, however, when a person (40+ year veteren mechanic)turns down a job as "simple" as a tranny flush and tells me he doesnt have the right tools..........that is telling you something right there

Ahh, no problem, and a BIG difference. Jag used a Ford trans up through 02 and those can be serviced at any shop with somewhat conventional fluid. The ZF is another monster all together, hence phd12volt's comments.

Yep, it really makes me wonder how many uninformed S-Type owners with ZF transmissions have been hoodwinked at the various quick-change tranny shops out there to purchase a "universal transmission fluid flush" for $119, on sale just for today, and are now driving around with who-knows-what fluid in their transmission pans....

Default Trans

I spoke with a service rep at Alpine Jag about the tranny flush for my 03 Jag X-Type, we spoke about the "sealed for life" stuff i voiced my concerns and he basically said the job was not expensive but rather the Fluid was and that would be the bulk of the cost. As i'm typing this I don't have the quote in front of me but I believe it was close to $400. but definately less than $500. The Fluid was the bulk of the cost and they had no problem doing it, he then informed me that the 03 X-Type Tranny was the last year of the true All wheel drive and those trannies are a little noisey, the flush would not change the noise.

Hi Greenhornet,

Did he mention the hiring of a Druid priest to bless the procedure?

Probably very few. Even the quickie shops realize that they would be on the hook for a trans if they blew it up. Nah, I'm sure they would just say what phd12volt's bud said.. basically, "I can't work on that one, you'll need to take it to the dealer". Kind of like the response I'm getting from tire shops regarding doing an alignment...

What reasons are the various tire shops giving you for not doing an alignment? An experienced alignment tech with up-to-date equipment should be able to properly align these cars. He may want to charge you more than a typical sedan would cost to align, but he should be able to do it....

Oh, I'm sure they can...They just don't want to mess with it. Might be the fact that the specs are hard to nail down. Might be the hours to do the job vs the cost of a "Lifetime Alignment". Anyway, their excuse is " we don't have the equipment to work on exotic cars like Jaguars". This has been more than one national chain. Anyway I found an alignment shop in Akron that will do it for 119 vs the dealer's 189.99. Funny thing is I just got a coupon book from a competing dealer in the Cleveland area that is under new management. In that book was a coupon for a 95.99 alignment. I'm going to gently tell my dealer about it and see if they'll match it.... There's a reason that other dealer is "under new management"....

Are your front tires showing excessive inside treadwear? That's the usual symptom of an S-Type out of alignment. If not, what are your tires showing or doing?

You are correct! The Jaguar and Lincoln LS used the 5 speed Ford tranny, starting in 2000 (1999 for the Jag). Jaguar in 2003 and up went to the 6 speed ZF transmission. The Lincoln LS stayed with the 5 speed but it was upgraded in 2003. Two completely different animals!!!
