Default Telescoping Wheel Died (video w/ sound)

I just got back from the dealer after my SPORT button broke off and fell into the bezel, and they replaced it for $110. I get into my car after arriving home, and these terrible 'crackling' noises eminate from the steering wheel as it tries to move in and out (and fails [sm=boohoo.gif]. It does go up and down, so now, until I get a chance to take it into the dealer again next week, i'll be reaching a bit further to grabhold and steer.

Will Select most likely cover this item?

it sounds like a cash register[] select better cover it, or the dealer should pick up the tab esp after you were just there!

there is a plastic gear strip that is known to fail in the column for this function, it happens a lot in the XJ8 which has the same steering controls,

it looks like a straw with gear teeth on one side, and is about five inches long

Jaguar will only sell the whole steering mechanism, and it will cost a lot of money ,

you can find just the gear strip online and either do it yourself, or get a garage to do the work, it will be much cheaper than having to pay full price.

It is just the reach motor. There is a kit for fixing it, however for your VIN range, dealer will say you need the column. The kit is for earlier cars, but fits yours. Select will cover the reach motor whether that includes replacing column or not. Common problem. Better if they replace upper column as this will have new tilt motor in it also.

Thanks for the advice/help guys, i spoke with my service manager for about 45 minutes yesterday, walking around the XF on the showroom floor and talking reliability of the XKs versus the x-types and s-types. He's a really nice guy, and said he used to be a tech that got promoted. He's the one who replaced the broken bezel for me, not a technician. I'll call him on Monday and let him know that the car misses him and apparently wants another visit.

Hey Jag-genious, let's hope it doesn't come down to me buying a part myself. Appreciate the offer though.

Took the car into the dealer this morning. Monday I made the appointment with another service member, and I was told it would be a 1/2 day job...in and out. This morning, upon handing over my keys, my normal service guy (the ex-tech) told me that they do not keep the parts in stock, and it would be 5 days...oh boy. I think I wimpered, and mentioned something about needing my car this weekend, but I can't really remember. I do recall telling him about the person I made the appointment with, however.

Anyway, here I am back at work, and I am waiting to hear from service, and hoping that if it does take 5 days to get the parts in, I can either keep the car until they arrive, or Select will cover my rental car that I will need to get me around. I am hoping for the former, as it doesn't prevent me from driving the car safely. Problem is, I bought the car from Momentum Jag in Houston, and I don't know if other dealers honor the whole 'loaner' car program for warranty service work. <crossing fingers>

The loaner/rental programme is set up by Jag. You are entitled to transport for any warranty work including select or extra mile.

Genius, do you have a source for just the reach motor drive cable as a separate item? Thanks

As FJT mentioned
Upper steering column and laoner car is covered
And you woudnt want a "fix" as in a part being put on the column
The reason the reach cable "looks like a 4 inch speedometer cable" snapped was due to the upper steering column itself binding while being used and putting excessive force on the failed part
common fault
Hope this helps in an informative way

I am shocked it will take 5 days. We keep column in stock normally as common problem.
Have dealer give your car back Matt and take it back when part comes in.

Default RE: Reparied by dealer

Well, my dealer sent someone to Plano, TX (north of Dallas), about a 50mile, one way trip, to get the upper steering column they needed to repair my car. They coudn't get it repaired the day I dropped it off, but it was completed the following day.

Out the door without a single dime paid. I'm thinking the 1-1/2 dozen kolaches I left on the front seat for them may have moved them quicker...or at least I like to think so.

In-Out, up-down, the wheel moves like she did from the day she was made. There is now a small rattle in the dash somewhere, I can't seem to find. Hoping it goes away, so I just turn up the radio a little louder.

I don't yet have any problems with the steering column extension/retraction and up/down adjustment. After I turn off the ignition, the steering wheel has retracted to its "exit" position, and I've removed the key, I continue to hear a clicking about once per second. If I change the steering column position switch to "off," the noise stops. I'm assuming this means that sometime in the not-too-distant future I'll need to do the repair. My question is this: in light of the symptoms described, will I need to buy a whole new upper steering column or just the motor & cable kit?
