Mike Hawthorn at Le Mans in a D-Type
Mike Hawthorn(Lemans winner 1955) driving a preview lap on the Lemans track in a Jaguar.(1956!) on Vimeo
Kind of an interesting video of Mike Hawthorn taking a preview lap at Le Mans. He was in a D-Type Jaguar and fitted out with a clumsy looking microphone so he could provide running commentary. He didn't go flat-out since there was a fair bit of traffic on the circuit.

great video
Hawthorn does a few oversteers, skims by a few roadcars, nearly kills a cyclist or two, then laughs 'typical French' ! all on a public road. There are times in that movie where he is easily exceeding 100mph, all very casual in the traffic.
There is a similar Aston Martin movie done by Stirling Moss in the 50s after AM's le Mans victory. I got it on VHS in the mid 90s, it came free with an issue of Classic & Sportscar, from memory.
On youtube there is a great one, done in 1962, of Hermann Lang driving the Mercedes W125 600hp GP car from the 30s, doing a lap of Nurburgring
