I have sort of a slow motion train wreck going on. I had my 1967 E-Type over at Jim's Jag shop for a new clutch and main seal. But then Jim had some personal tragedy and has not been able to get the crew needed to take my car apart and get the work done. It has been sitting up on a lift in his shop for a year. I really felt bad for him and it was easier to believe that he was getting to the point where he could get the work done than it was to pull the car out.

So I need to find someone who can rescue my car and get the work done.

Can someone email me Motorcarman's phone number? Obviously, I am not in a hurry, but I am having trouble finding a shop that can handle this big job... and obviously, I am not in a hurry!

I tried them when I was first looking and they weren't interested in such a big job on such an old car. But I have talked to Bob Gauff (who couldn't take my car in for a while) and British Auto Specialists. I think I'll be taking it to them as they can take it in on Friday.

As I was figuring it, the main (rear) seal started to leak oil which ruined the clutch. But BAS suggested that it may really be bad bearings that caused the seal to go... and that a complete overhaul might be $8,000-$10,000. They seem to have a good rep, so we'll see how that goes.

Another prop for our own Motorcarman near Decatur. I'm out there annually. Great guy, unbeatable value and knowledge.

Does Bob Gauff work at British Auto Specialists or is he located elsewhere? Left(near)aside, let me know what your experience is like. - John

NOT Autobahn. European Car Specialists in Lewisville has the modern Jag computer equipment and was very professional and knowledgable on the phone and works with most extended warranty companies, I'll probably be using him for my extended warranty work, after I go over the thing myself to make sure Autobahn didn't cause any more issues.

So far very happy with European Auto Care in Lewisville. It's taken a long time to get the warranty approved, but they identified the problem with my car by description of the symptoms (confirmed it was what I thought it was) and found a couple of things needing attention, all under warranty, that I hadn't noticed myself, and I'm pretty particular.

Finally got the car back about 2 weeks ago, and everything is fixed. The issue ended up being the adjustable cam sprockets, which had to be ordered out of Europe apparently, as Jaguar has never sold them by themselves in the US.

No more startup rattle, though! Although now I have a squeaking pulley (just corrosion on the bearings from being laid up.) The shop did a great job by me, and are handling the negotiations with the extended warranty people themselves. I was only out the $100 deductible and the cost of a couple of oil changes. Feels good to have my car back.

Definitely recommend the shop though. Tony is passionate about cars, and I met and talked to the mechanic who worked on mine, who reminds me enough of the Jesse kid from Fast and Furious movies that he could have been the inspiration. Very interested in how things work, which was cool. They gave me one of the bad sprockets to keep, and the mechanic kept the other one, to remember the extended battle.

I've had great luck with Jay and Kendall over at Hance's European. Very close to Mockingbird and I-35E. They're very good at laying it all out there and giving you an order of importance on when you should replace something or have maintenance done.

Jim House knows Jags better than anyone I know. He is very honest and always tries to get your replacement parts at the lowest price. If a used or refurb part will work as well as a new one, he'll get that for you if you want. He put Bilsteins on my XK8 and tuned the suspension nicely when I first bought it used.

He has done a lot of work for me and it has always been first class, usually coming out about 2/3 the price of the dealer. He is an ornery Texan with a great sense of humor. He also has a good relationship with the JagMac folks and if either of them feel one can do a job better than the other they'll refer it.
