Default Airbag Code 28

I just started getting airbag code 28 today. I looked it up on a couple lists of Jaguar codes
and it doesn't even seem to exist.

I'm not sure if any of this is relevant, but I'll include it anyway. Yesterday afternoon I attempted to replace my bank 1 upstream oxygen sensor (near the firewall). I've been getting intermittent P1646 codes and decided to replace it since I'm due for a NY state inspection this month. Long story short, I was unable to get the sensor out myself since it seems to be seized. In the process of trying to get it out, I was careful not to damage anything else, but the sensor itself is pretty messed up now since I tried to get it with vice grips at one point... It will be replaced this week anyway though.

After my unsuccessful attempt, the check engine light has remained off. I drove a few places last night and had no error lights at all. It wasn't until this morning that the airbag light started flashing, and like I said before, 28 doesn't seem to be on the list of codes. I thought this may have been linked to my car being parked in the hot sun. It was 80 degrees out today and my car was parked in the direct sun in the middle of my parking lot for several hours. I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes to reset everything but the code persisted.

So now I come to you fellow members seeking advice. I will also leave the car overnight and see what happens in the morning.

Nobody?

The light has been coming on each time I start the car, with the exception of this morning. My commute to work today was the only time in the past couple days when the light has not come on.

The only place I've found, outside of the dealer, that can read my Airbag codes is Firestone. They want $99 just to diagnose it...

I am having the O2 sensor replaced at 5:30 today. If for some reason that is linked to the airbag light going off then ideally it should stop after the repair. I'll report back later

I'm having fun talking to myself here...

I got the O2 sensor replaced but I've still got the airbag light. Anyone know of a good place to get it read at least? Pep boys says they can't do it and recommended the dealer or a collision shop

I doubt the flash code 28 for the airbags is connected to your O2 sensor problem, unless you disturbed some wiring for the airbags.

The workshop manual says flash code 28 indicates a problem with the driver's knee bolster circuit. I know nothing about where that's located.

Good luck.

It took some searching, but it looks like this flash code 28 is for your knee bolster airbag circuit (aka driver lower air bag).

It looks like this feature was only on later model X-Types, and thus probably the lack on information online in regards to this particular code.

The JTIS recommends doing several specific electrical tests to identify the short or open circuit causing this issue. For starters, I'd refer to page 2710, 2718, and 2733 of the 2810-page JTIS PDF file that's available on this site.

Disclaimer: I've don't even have one of these on my x-type, and have no knowledge about how they work or the dangers of messing with it.

Check the wire connections under the drivers seat.

Awesome! I knew someone would find the meaning of the code, thanks guys

I'll skip getting the code read for now and try the procedures recommended in the workshop manual. At least I know what the car is trying to tell me now.

Any ideas why sometimes the light starts flashing immediately upon starting the car and other times only after driving for 10-15 minutes?

More good news, I was cleaning the interior over the weekend and decided to try and fix the error code. I got underneath the steering column and reached behind the lower airbag. I wiggled around all of the wires I could get to, thinking maybe something was loose. I didn't find any loose connections, but the light has now been off for 3 days so it looks like it's all set

Thanks again to all who responded!

That would be a bad connection on the wires then?
