Default Check engine light: P0430 - Bank 2 Catalytic Converter

Hi everyone - just got a CEL the other night while driving on the freeway at regular speed. I went to AutoZone and the only code that I'm getting is P0430, which says the Catalytic Converter in bank 2 is bad. I've done some thread searching and only a few people have also gotten this code.

My questions:
-Could either the upstream or downstream O2 sensor be causing the error if they are going bad, or would I see a code for these instead?
-Would running a few fuel injector treaments through the engine help?
-Do I really have to replace my Catalytic Converter? If so, anyone have a good place to get one cheap?

According to the JTIS the problems could include: HO2 Sensor disconnected, HO2 Sensor to ECM wiring fault, HO2 Sensor heater to ECM wiring fault, HO2 Sensor heater failure, Upstream HO2 Sensor failure, Downstream HO2 Sensor failure or Catalyst failure so the answers to your questions are
1. Yes
2. No
3. Maybe http://www.automotix.net/partshotlin...-requests.html

Thanks for the good answers. I'll test the oxygen sensors on that side if possible and/or replace them and report back on the results.

Default Injector Cleaner

Hey Guys,

For #2 - I'd have to say not always a 'NO'.

Check out this thread. I just updated it with my results... but as with most things... your results may vary. (p.s. don't even consider running any crappy tire stocked or branded cleaners)

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...d.php?p=281743

Cheers!

After getting the light and reading the forums, I decided that the only thing I could do at the time was put some of that Redline fuel injector cleaner in.

A few days later, I was able to go in to my mechanic. As he was reading the codes, I noticed that it was giving a P1111 code. After clearing the P0430, the check engine light went off and has stayed off ever since.

Gas mileage seems to be better too... I would love for this to be a permanent fix but I won't be too surprised if the light comes back on down the road. For now though, I love NOT seeing that CEL!

EDIT: UPDATE: Light came back on, same code. Guess it's time to replace an oxygen sensor or the cat. *sigh* Hope I can find a pretty good deal.

The same thing happened to my '02 X-Type over the Christmas break. The CEL went on, then off, and then on again. I took it to the dealership and they have confirmed a new catalytic converter is needed. They gave me the sensor scans off of the IDS diagnostic tool and it clearly shows variation within the 15 seconds it was tested. Bank 2 showed voltage jumping up and down between .1volts and .6volts on the downstream sensor. This is compared to a very steady voltage reporting on bank 1's downstream sensor; which reported .6 volts and decreasing steadily to .3 volts but never jumping up and down. So, I'm assuming the variation in bank 2 reflects instability in the bank 2 catalytic converter?

I just find it so hard to believe that a car with 70k miles, already needs a catalytic converter. Those should last a lot longer than that!

Nevertheless, if so, what's the best approach to resolution, 1) attempting to replace it myself 2) a discount muffler shop 3) spend the $1500 at the Jag dealership?

What year is your X-type and how many miles is on it?

If it were me I would get a cheap code reader/resetter. and monitor how often the CEL comes on.

It is unlikely that the CC is dead, unless you have been running the wrong or poor quality fuel through the car for an extended period. PLEASE fill in your location so we know where you are.

If the CEL is persistant, I would take the risk to change the downstream O2 sensor. or if you are thrifty, and handy, they you can swap them from bank 1-2. See if the problem stays with the sensor or with the CC.

good luck.

Thanks sport30. I'm pretty handy. What's the best way to proceed? I'm assuming a physical swap between the two is what you are suggesting? Do you have directions and images on the best way to do that? I'm assuming they are both fairly easy to get to under the car?

I have also read to run Lucas Upper Cylinder and Gas Treatment for about three tanks and that might cause it to go away as well. Any feedback from anyone on that idea?

Hi, I was hoping maybe someone here could offer a few ideas for me and my mechanic. I have a P0430 code that won't go away. I originally had multiple misfire codes along with P0420 and P0430 codes after replacing the upper and lower intake gaskets all except the P0420 and P0430 codes went away so I replaced the cats with oem direct fit converters. The P0420 code went away but the P0430 code remained. So the Oxygen Sensors were replaced that corresponded to the P0430 code. Still can't shake the P0430 code. Ideas?

Thanks

I did figure out a long term fix for this problem. I removed the O2 sensor from the lower cat (this is accessible from underneath the car) and installed a spark plug "spacer" that fit the threads/dimensions of the O2 sensor. I then reinstalled the O2 sensor, but of course into the spacer. After that, the code never came back.

Here's more info: spacer is M18 X 1.5 thread size <-- this is exactly how mine looked, I bought mine from AutoZone/O-Reilly auto parts but you can get them from eBay, etc.

My cats on my 02 are being gutted as we speak. I have o2 extenders on the way via ebay to hopefully cure the cel from gutting... This was the cheapest way I found to cure my clogged cats, and to make sure it can't happen again... The price of those cats makes it pretty much total the car if both need replacing... Truly ridiculous...

Did the problem ever return? I have a similar problem.

The O2 spacer worked for me. It's been almost 2 1/2 years ago. No CEL.

Thanks Jac. Spacer on order. I have tried an angled spacer but that throws up other DTCs as sensor not getting hot enough.

Did you ever find the fault?

If an O2 sensor is fooled I wonder what that leaves in the exhaust gas... which in the UK is what is tested (MoT) annually. (Obviously it leaves pollutants. You wouldn't need to fool the sensor if they weren't there. But how much & what kind.)

I ran through a big water puddle and the car wouldn't accelerate right. Even in park and idling it still sounded like it was choking out. Got codes 0420 and 0430. Changed the cats and now car is still sluggish. Is the water the main culprit or maybe the O2 sensors? Needing help here!!!

The Jaguar info (free on this site) shows O2 sensors are suspects more than the cats.
