I just lifted the seat. I took a vice grip and moved the screw, and the geat engaged but then stops again. so it is definately the gear...both motors work and both neither raise or lower. I bet a machinist could possibly duplicate the gears for a perm fix with non plastic. Havent looked at it, but I guess I could swap out the passenger motors with the driver side.

I pulled my seat (ds) its stuck up! Must be a jag thing. Motors making noise and when I grab gear with a vice grip I can get the motor to catch briefly, like a broken gear...must be the down motor, or both. I' found a part out and will pick it up tomorrow for 50 bucks for the whole seat robot. Just replaced AC compressor, accumulator, and orafice! Nock on wood, all things work perfect now!

I have the same problem with the seat motors. I took the seat and motor gear system aprt. In my case the gear is missing a few tooth. The motor works but can't grab the other gear to move the seat. Paying $180.00 per motor is crazy when you know it is a $0.50 part that could easily be replaced.

It is not very complicated, but if all you have is a screw driver and hammer, you might not want to deal with it yourself. The seat needs to be removed and because the motors do not work, it is hard to get to some of the bolts.
I have not found a gear replacement for it yet. I was also looking for ideas and suggestions. If I do find one, I will take pictures of the process and document it here. The sad part was that I had to rebuild everything without fixing anything so that the car could be use.

From the highest position if you push equally on the lever it goes down and slightly back at the same time. I removed my seat cause the butt tilt wasn't working and found the coupling for that mechanisim was broke but I can get comfortable without it as long as the lap tilt works.Looks like a bugger to replace.Only the driver seat is broke of course the pass. one is perfect, all systems are ok.

I took out the frame that holds the seat. I bought a 2005 frame, and hope it fits the 2002 x-type I have. I got it used for 50 dollars. he promised the motors worked. So we'll see. I can use parts if not...I know its gears not working. I think if they are nylon, you can get gears that are metal. I have a big telescope, and there is a gear place to replace nylon with metal. For telescopes it is "Bucks gears" who knows they may or there may be another gear place.

Wow I think I may have found a place to buy the gears, except you have to inquire about them.

I actually ended up buying these since they will last a lot longer and are the same price as the plastic ones.

Okay the plastic gears are stripped. There is a thread showing that you can order steel gears from a Brit car manufacturer that use the same motor but steel gears. I went to craigs list and bought a seat mechanism for about 50 bucks and swapped it with mine. Lots of wiring so take a pic before you start. Its pretty easy to do. if the motor hums, the gears (plastic) are stripped. If you hold the motor on past the end point they strip. Passengers or mechanics or valet's would possibly not give a cuss and strip them.
