Default Fuel pump replacement cost

My car stoped running while driving down the freeway. I had it towed to local shop and they say they think it is the fuel pump.
cost to replace... $1000.
$400. for the pump. $600. labor. 6 hour job.
Does sound about right?

Just checked on line and saw a place selling pumps for ~$980.00 and then googled x-type fuel pump replacement. The fuel tank has to be removed and a special tool seems to be needed to do it. So all things considered (without having had to do the job my self...) it looks like a pretty costly repair.

hi, I replaced the fuel pump in my 2000 3L S-type a few months ago. I bought the fuel pump from Kragen's and cost about $100 as I recall. If the X-type is similar to the S-type, the fuel pump can be removed through an access hole under the rear seat lower cushion. The replacement was pretty straight-forward and I didn't need any special tools. Be careful with the fuel line clamps as they are easy to break and available only if you buy a complete fuel line ($$$$) You should check it out. $1000 to replace the fuel sounds pretty high to me , $980 for the pump is just whacked.

MichaelNV, that price isn't too far off. It is a little high as I don't think it truely takes 6 hours to replace the fuel pump. Should be able to be done in 4 hours or less as all you really have to do is drop the rear driveshaft and then some of the exhaust. From there you can drop the tank. Unfortunately, we don't have an access to the fuel pump like the S-TYpes have. Boy do I wish as that would make things so much easier. But, not to be.

I've had two fuel pumps replaced... not in my X type but in a 99 Blazer and a 97 Tahoe. The blazer cost me 900+ at Pep Boys in Texas and the 97 Tahoe cost me 700+ with a local mechanic I trust here in Virginia. So $1000 seems a little high, but it isn't unimaginable.

I also need a fuel pump in my 99 XK8, and this model uses a pump found in common Ford and Mazdas. Autozone wants $99 for the part, but RockAuto.com has the same Airtex pump for approx. $58.

From the FAQ section for XK8's, the illustrated repair section says you have to use a Ford style disconnect tool up on two fuel lines above the differential. Then, the tank's removed from the car.

The repair can be time consuming for a first timer, but an experienced mechanic can probably do the job in 2-3 hrs. Once you get thru the fuel line connection, it doesn't sound like it's any big deal.

Thanks for the replys.
Turns out driveshaft, exhaust and rear sub frame had to be dropped. Then the tank.
1100. to replace pump
105. for the tow truck
120. for the car rental
I'm feeling a little light in the back pocket...
But the car runs great again. Hope thats it.

Did anyone try making your own access hole ? Im going to i will take pictures and have details about the building the access lid which will have t be made . Still way easier than removing the tank which is absolutely retarded. Some careful plotting and and very expensive tin snips and about 20 minutes ....

I may I hate airtools due to the noise and im very efficient at cutting perfect circles with snips for speakers . Of course the hole will have to be properly smoothed and exposed metal sealed then a proper led constructed and bolted into place . My real issue is which tank do i have the side mounted pump or the pump in the center up on the corner into the trunk. I have seen both picts decribed as my 02 x type 2.5 fuel tank.....
