Thanks Dennis, for the nice writeup and pics! This is definitely good preventive maintenance, particularly for those who intend to keep their cars beyond the duration of the warranty.

 

A brilliant thread Dennis..i'm off to get a needle and some grease,o'h and a mat to lie on, the whine on my x is doing my head in only does it sometrimes (more when its cold) took mine to the *******s and they drove it for 8 miles ..would you believe it - it wouldn't whine for them ..murphies law.

 

Pictures look great Dennis, man that is clean!! Thank you for posting up some pictures. I am not sure if this happens to everyone, but I only got the whine when it was below freezing and the colder it was the worse it was.

Dennis.....thanks for this. I'm doing mine this afternoon. Mine whines around 30-35 mph, especially now that the real cold has arrived in Boston!!

When I bought my car it was very loud in the cabin, louder then I thought it should be. The tires were bad and a rim was bent so I thought once I fixed those 2 things the noise would go away. $300 for a new rim and $850 in tires.....it got better but didnt go away. So I thought maybe some more sound deading... $250 worth of Dynamat and it got better but still didnt go away. THEN a few hours on the forum and I ran across this post, had the grease, had the gun, spent $7 on the needle and 10 minutes under the car and it's GREAT.
THANKS AGAIN DENNIS, I NEVER WOULDHAVE THOUGHTOF THIS.

hey houston, where did you put the Dynamat? I was thinking about doing this to my X-Type but did not know where to start.

 

Is it just me, or everyone else does not see any pictures or instructions in the FAQ write-up?

 

Hey Ruslan,
you won't be able to see what Dennis has previously posted as he has removed the info he posted.
Seems like he's had a problem with the new setup and or the fact that the techs were all made supermods in error and decided to spit the dummy out and leave....his personal choice.
I'm sure the info will be available elsewhere and help given if asked for.

GREASING Propshaft Center Support Bearing
As you all know, this seems to be a commonproblem with the X-type (all years) and many here have replaced their entire Prop shaft as a result of the Center Support bearing failing or begins to howl, vibrate and whine.

First of all, KUDOS goes to Chas944, for giving me tips and inspiration to do this in this post HERE.

Mine was not showing any signs of failure or noise, so this was preventive maintenance to prolong it's life...
I found the bearing outside caked in hardened old grease and there was surely not much left inside..I cleaned both side off, so I could make out where the rubber seal and bearing housing met..the front side (side towards the front of the car) had no visible entry points or means of penetrating to inject grease...The back side (side facing the rear of the car) has little notches in the rubber seal on the edge where it meets the metal bearing casing..These notches are at 6 o'clock, 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock...I'm sure there is one at 12 o'clock, but not able to get at it..

TOOLS and SUPPLIES

*Standard Grease Gun

*Grease Gun HOSE about 18" long

*18 Gauge Grease Injection Needle



Grease:
Note: Warm grease in hot water to about 100 degrees F, to make it flow easier out the needle.





Insert Grease Needle (it goes in about half way)into the 6 o'clock notch on the rear side of bearingand pump until you see new grease oozing out from the bearing on the front side..







Continue with the other two postions (10 o'clock and 2 o'clock)in the same way..

2 o'clock



Wipe off all the excess and be on your way with a freshly Greased Bearing.

Dennis did a great job writing this up.
I did it to mine, and Dennis' pics made it a very simple ordeal while I was under there (my car was NOWHERE NEAR as clean as Dennis' is)
But be aware that this is a "It might not help, but certainly can't hurt" sort of thing. In my case, it did not seem to have any affect whatsoever on the noise. I tend to agree with Real_Tech (I think it was him) who has assessed the problem as being the rubber surrounding the bearing, rather than the bearing itself.
But as I say, it can't hurt.
So go get 'em tiger!

Thanks a lot for re-post. My stearing was always shaking a bit, and i think now i know why. Will try to get it done tomorow, see how it goes.

 

have had customers try this sometimes it doesnt work.. 50/50 shot

 

Seems to be the consensus of opinion there jag genius, but I guess as long as it can't do any harm.

I'm gonna give a shot(of grease) to my whining bearing rubberthing at weekend, but I don't have any possibilities to check under the car before it so I'm asking is there anything that covers the bearing and must be taken off before I can do the greasing?

Just like Dennis post says, take grease gun and put grease in, thats ALL?
