Default My X type 2.0 D went into Limp mode

Hi all I was going home on a motorway I was doing about 85MPH and my Car suddenly went into Limp Mode ( I lost a lot of Power ) so I Pulled over and I noticed the Limp mode light on along with the Glow Plug Light Flashing,

I Turned the Engine off , Then Turned the Ignition on and the Limp mode light was on but when I turn over the Engine all lights are gone and the car is now Fine

Could anyone Please Advise me on this please?

Thank you

Not an expert on the diesels, but to me it sounds like you got a bad glow plug. Did you get any check engine lights on? If so, go gets the codes pulled which will tell you what sub-system of the car is having the problem

Sorry but it is not the glow plug gone bad...

That "fault" could be almost anything... from "ghost code" to something worse. Perhaps that's nothing, or it might be the first symptom from one of the injectors loosing from car system.

Definitely needs the fault codes to be read, before that we can't know for sure.

Me and my wife have now owned X-Type 2.0 diesel about 3,5 years. During this time we have driven with it almost 98000 kilometers (now car has almost total 198000km). And during this time I have had twice that "ghost code": suddenly Limp-mode ON (flashing glow plug), giving code p0251. Re-starting the car, all was OK. Cleared that fault code, everything worked fine. At first this p0251 came over a year ago, and the latest was about two-three months ago. After this second incident, I disconnected the battery, removed plastic engine cover and disconnected wires from MAF and Rail Pressure sensor.

Only once I have had serious code: p2339. Fault was that one of the injectors needed to be re-calibrated to car. This happened about two years ago. When this fault came on, first it had only flashing glow plug, after restarting the car there was also Check Engine -light.

Almost forgot: You might wan't to a bit hurry up to read those codes. Because X-Type has interesting feature: If - and I mean if - the fault is not recurrent or serious enough, or does not appear again after certain amount of "drive cycle", the car's computer clears automatically that particular code. Drive cycle means certain amount of time and driven kilometers / miles, including braking, stopping, certain speed driven certain amount of time, engine temperature high enough, and so on.

I have the same problem and Code is P0251 with test Diagnostic tool plugged in( OGBii) it won't give you anymore details! the code relates to, EGR valve unit/ fuel pump / Fuel filter / Injectors. I so far have cleaned EGR valve , messy job, about £135 new or soak and clean.
Not helped. Next job will be Fuel filter , This is common fault so i've read. Located on right side of fuel tank in front of rear wheel on bulk head, secured by 10mm nut on circular clamp 2x pipes with simple clips, beware of pressure on fuel line, rag over fuel clip on engine feed side.Plastic wash Bowl under will help. Watch this Space.

Default Fuel filter

I replaced my fuel filter today as suggested.
The Job was a simple, The 04 diesel 2.0 X-type and the filter is located under bonnet ! not under car as was written in other forums. Location is on bulk head in front of steering wheel.
10 minute Job, and could save you loads of money!
it simply has 3 connections (-> Inlet from Tank White clip) Flow return is Blue, clip. And (<- outlet to Injector Bar is white also) very simple Job.
Open your fuel filler cap at start of job and vacum is released before you start! once new filter is attatched you will need to turn over the starter about 3 times (30 secs total ) before you get full flow of fuel. Job done.
Looks like I still need an Injector/ ors ##$£€ still I'm spending !
It goes on diagnostics machine this week and I should know whats giving me my limp mode/Glow Plug.

Hi, I had the same problem with my 2003 reg X-Type 2-0 D. it suddenly lost power as I attempted to overtake on a motorway at the weekend (I was in cruise control and had litteraly just put my foot on the accelerator and moved into the overtaking lane).
The glow plug light was flashing amber and the engine light had come on in red. As the car had cut out, I also lost the power steering and managed to move into the hard shoulder. After a minute or two I resterted the engine and the lights had disappeared ?
I continued my journey without any other issues, But today i find the glow plug light is again flashing ?
Is the car safe to drive, and can anyone shed some light on this issue , Thanks

Iv got the same problem with my car atm
car went into limp mode an the glow plug light began flashing
an obd2 scan just said fuel fault
so after a bit of unsuccessful fault finding a friend suggested i did a leak test on the injectors and it turns out all four injectors are leaking

but before i go an order the new injectors im going run some diesel purge through the system al thou it probably wont fix my car its worth a shot for only £7 off ebay

hope this info is of some use

I work doing diagnostics on cars on a daily basis. The flashing glow plug light is a common fault on diesel Jags (and mondeos) between 2003 - 2007. The fault is caused by the electronic turbo actuator. Take a look at the following link for a much much cheaper alternative to changing the turbo. https://www.ecutesting.com/jaguar_x_...ctuator_f.html

Default Did you resolve the problem? was it the fuel pump?

I had a similar problem on a late 2005 model. It was due to lack of fuel pressure at the injectors due to a failing pump. Shortly after the garage "fixed "it I had issues with it getting progressively harder to start, blowing out clouds of black smoke for the first few seconds after the engine first fired.

I'm now driving a different 2 car (another 2.0D but this one is from 2008) and I think its suffering the same problem. it starts fine and idles ok and accelerates well from cold - Provided that I keep the revs up. If I expect it to pull at low revs or floor the accelerator the engine "misses" and the glow plug light flashes. If I continue instead of changing down, then the service "engine light" comes on and the engine "dies". I don't even need to stop to reset it; a flick of the ignition switch; off then back on is all it takes. However, that is a bit hairy unless on an on straight stretch as power on steering and brakes is lost momentarily. The glow plug stops flashing immediately the ignition has been cycled. The "Service Engine" light takes a few days to reset itself.

Most of my driving is is on motorways about 75mph) ; and I normally average 42mpg ( a little less at this time of year). Normally if I try hard enough I can get it up to 50mpg. Since the fault started fuel efficiency has been improving. It is now 55mpg driving hard and over 60mpg when being a bit more careful. Presumably it is running weak=hot and I'll do piston damage if I continue, but I've been too busy to get it sorted, and don't really trust the garage I used previously.

Default Same as Jerry

I have exactly the same issue as Jerry....about one week ago my glow plug light flashed and i lost power....restarted and all ok.

it happend twice to me on a journey yesterday so I called out the AA. He tried to read the diagnostics but could not find any errors. I am due to be to towed back this morning as i dont trust the car at the moment.

i have also noticed my fuel economy rising, upto 53mpg where i usually get 45mpg. I also get a fair bit of smoke when i accelerate hard and have quite a rough idle with a slight knocking sound.

Does this also sound like fuel pump ?

Thanks,
Matt

Hello Matt,
looks like this must be a common fault if 2 of us are reporting it at the same time. Any luck in getting it sorted? I can't find anyone working in the Watford area before the 2nd Jan.

I took mine into my local garage and they also couldn't find any fault codes.

They have said that the EGR valve was very dirty and this could cause the issues. They are going to clean it out and give it back to me to try.

Jerry, Im in St Albans - if you dont have any luck in Watford let me know and I will give you details of the garage where I took mine.

Matt,
The fault codes reset after a period, but over the holiday the service engine light came back on, and I found a garage to read the fault codes (inadequate fuel pressure at the injectors). They did not consider themselves competent to do the repair.

Eventually I took it into independent Jag Specialists in Welwyn this afternoon ( I work in Stevenage), but they haven't got back to me yet.

Before taking it in, the condition got progressively worse. I reset the trip computer Thursday before going into work. For that 50 mile round trip I averaged 60mpg. By the time I'd taken it to work and then to the garage today - another 30 miles, the overall economy had improved to 83mpg. By my calculations, over those last 30 miles the car was averaging 230 mpg!!! Is that a record for an X type?

Default X-type Limp mode

My 2008 X-type had the same problem before Christmas went into limp mode after glow plug lit up, switching engine on and off removed glow plug but left engine management light on. Took it to a local garage who reset light but came back on next day after same issue. Had it diagnosed by local garage as all 4 fuel injectors failing following a leak test, dubious all four would fail so took it to a Jag specialist and diagnosed same problem. Had all four replaced, not cheap £135 each plus 4 hours labour £780 plus Vat. Problem resolved but at a cost.

My car was still doing the same after cleaning the Egr valve. Garage kept investigating and have also now said that I have a problem with two injectors. They are getting me a price on Monday.

Thanks DJC for the costings....i was expecting about £150 each injector. So reckon I should be up and running for about £500.

The independent jag specialists I took mine into is going to change the fuel filter, clean the fuel system out with Forte, and conduct a leak back test before assuming the problem is with the injectors. That is exactly what I would have done if I had the time and energy to do it myself.
As my car has only done 69K miles, I think that the most likely explanation is fuel contamination. I did run the tank nearly empty (down to 0 miles on the trip computer) before an emergency refuel at Asda shortly before the problems started.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I have a question. I know nothing about diesel engines,If the car is not working properly why would the MPG go UP instead of going down? Seems so counterintuitive to an engine running efficiently and as designed. And if that increase in MPG is a symptom I would wonder why engineers wouldn't have figured out a way to harness that increase when they design a diesel engine. Just trying to learn.

Hi Alfadude,
When a car runs too lean, it also burns the fuel too hot. (think of the gas flame from a bunsen burner - shut off the air supply, and the flame is cool, yellow, open it up to let the air through and it burns much hotter with a blue flame). This results in all kinds of other problems - eventually I'd burn a hole through the pistons. In the mean time its running like a pig - lumpy like a petrol engine with a weak spark, or one that is firing on 2.5 cylinders. It won't pull under load, and if I'm heavy footed going up hill, the engine cuts out altogether.

They treated it with Forte. When I gave it to them it was almost out of fuel, so they added £40 of good quality fuel, took it for a high speed run - no improvement. Leak back test after the clean showed 3 injectors leaking badly, and one marginal. Quote for work to date + test of injectors + replacement of all 4 injectors £770 +VAT.

Fivespeed - yes I've seen your opinion on the UK forum. I can't post there though as my registration does not seem to have worked properly. I think you have a point!

My first X-type 2.0D was a company car. When it was 3 yrs old I bought it from the lease company for a very good price which included a fully comp 2 year warranty. In those 2 years I had a new turbo, new steering rack, the fuel pump replaced, and the engine dropped to replace a leaking oil seal. All under warranty, so it did not cost me. When it was 6 years old I was rear-ended shortly before I had to get the injectors changed - it was getting difficult to start, and burning a lot of smoke when started after parking overnight. The car was written off, but I was given almost as much for it as I'd paid 3 years previously.
Despite my experiences of lack of reliability of the X-type diesel - and I couldn't even blame the previous owner! - I then went out and replaced it with another - I guess I didn't believe that I'd be so unlucky a 2nd time.....
