Default Newbie needs help

Hi all -

I'm a relatively new Jag owner. I have a '05 x-type Sportwagon with about 111K miles on it. I purchased it about 6 mo ago and have put on about 6K miles.

I knew that I needed to get the suspension looked at, and had been reading your great advice about e-shocks, etc.

I just got back from a 500 mile round trip - and my rear tires are shredded. My local shop doesn't want to touch the suspension, so I have an appointment at the dealer (Rockford, IL)

My questions is this - how much are we talking for new shocks, control arm, -- other problems?

Thanks,

Dan

Looks like a couple hunnert $$ will fix 'em! (plus new tires, all around is really the only way to go)

Dan, looking online, here is what you can most likely expect to pay for what you are looking at (all prices are Jaguar recommended prices):

Shocks: $136 each (or $272 total)
Lower forward rear control arms: $140 each ($280 total)
New tires: $200 roughly based on what style/brand you get ($400)
Labor: they will probably quote you about 4 hours at $150 per hour ($600 total which should include the alignment that will be needed)

So, out the door, you can probably expect to be hit with a bill for around $1500.

This is where you can save yourself a lot of money by simply doing the work yourself (with the exception of the tires). You can get a pair of replacement arms for around $150 from online retailers. The shocks can be had for around $79 each through eshocks.com (one of the cheapest places I have found for our shocks, the factory ones are made by Bilstien).

So, for roughly $300 in parts, another $100 for an alignment and $400 for new tires, you can potentially get it done for around $800 if you do some work yourself. The shocks and arms are super easy (the arms are 2 bolts, the arm falls out of the car, the shocks are 1 bolt and 2 nuts and it falls out of the car, no special tools are needed). If you are that far into the car, probably worthwhile to also do the upper arm replacement too for an extra $100 getting the adjustable arms from a Volvo S40 (many articles here about this mod).

If you need to know any more, let me know. Just putting out the facts here.

Default Reccomended online dealers

Thermo (or others) -

What online dealers do you recommend for the suspension parts?

Dan, look up JPLV for your suspension parts if you are buying factory parts. They are a sponsor here and they will give you some of the best prices you will find. As for something like the adjustable upper control arm, the dealership is not going to have this part and you can find it on a place like E-bay for around $100 for a pair of arms (factory wants roughly $100 per arm).

I have also used "Jaguar Parts" - Jaguar parts and accessories catalog and had good luck with them as they are a dealership based out of Cleveland OH. The trick with them is if you want the low price, you have to do everything via the internet. You call them and the price changes.
