1 Insert key into ignition
2 Turn key to 'I"
3 Turn key "II" and back to 'I' quickly 4 times
4 Alarm system will chime once when key is back to 'I' for the
fourth time
5 Remove key from ignition
6 Press any button on each key fob and alarm system will chime
for each fob if it has been programmed correctly
7 Press unlock/lock/trunk etc to make sure everything works

Payspecial attention to point 6, every fob you have must be programmed at the same time although you only need to use one key in ignition.

Default Replacement Key

Quick question,

What does "fob" mean? Im planning on having a spare and i was wondering if i buy a blank key off ebay, will i still be able to program it as described above. Or does it have to be cut in a specific way? Trying to find a way to avoid the dealership's cost of a new key.

fob is the plaatic part with the remote buttons on it that holds the key

So if i purchase a blank key say off of ebay? what needs to be done to it? And does anyone know where i can get both the fob and the key for cheap reasonable prices?

Does no. 6 mean that you must reprogam ALL the the fobs you have or just the one you are replaceing thata new?

It means ALL the fobs you have (max 4) as the (rolling) code is changed so any you dont reprogram wont work as they wont be reprogrammed to the new code
PS Was talking to a colleague today whose friend works at a Ford dealer.He has a device from the dealership which when pressed unlocks ALL Jaguars and Fords in a car park.The look on peoples faces as they are driving along and he locks/unlocks thier doors with this device.Abyone else heard of such a device?

Quick question. I just got my Jag finally from the shop and if i press lock on the key (fob), it does not lock the doors. I pressed it many times and it still didnt work. I have to insert the key into the door to lock all the time. Any reason why this is happening? Is it because i havent programmed it as discussed in this thread? Thanks anyone.

I'm having the same issue...1 remote works the other works sometimes...both have new batteries.

Does anyone know where the antena is on the car for the fob? On my cts I've heard guys add some wire to it and it gives the remote a longer range..the jag seems to be about 5-10 feet from the car, and my cts without the antena mod works at easily 50 feet.

ok so i programmed it as described in this thread and still it doesnt work...any other clue? The battery works and i know because the fob can unlock the doors, trunk and even turn on the headlights from a distance but it wont lock the door. It chirps when you try to lock the doors as if it is locked but really it hasnt. Any other clue someone? thanks

Yes, the key fob is bad! Get a new key fob. On one of mine only 3 of the
4 buttons work. They do go bad/wear out.

I bought the, supposedly refurbished one, but I would've never known it wasn't brand new. I received it within a few days of calling in my order. I reprogrammed it as described above and doing both at the same time made them both work.

Bought my spare fobs from ebay as they are/were on there all the time
3 brand new ones for a grand total of £10 (around $16 inc shipping) now reprogrammed from the X Type to work on the XJ
They are even still in the sealed packets but now open my car so can be sold as new or reprogrammed again when I change cars next

Hi I have a 2003 S type R and my 2 Key Fobs no longer work. This was after the mechanic worked on my car, disconnected the battery, however it was for a very brief time since the radio did not need to be reset with the security code and did not loose any of the preset station settings.

I tried your method and did not work. I also tried others that I found on a Google search. Is there a fuse that handles the key fob transmitter or is the procedure for my car different. Also can anyone tell me where the transmitter is located on the car maybe it came loose.

Your car is the same as mine I think (both different to the X Type).
Try this

NOTE: When carrying out steps 4 to 6, all current transmitters will be erased from memory. Ensure all transmitters to be programmed are available before proceeding.

NOTE: If at any stage two chirps are emitted, then an error has occurred, if this is the case, the process has to be repeated from step 1. When carrying out steps 1 to 7, ensure no other transmitters are operated within range of the system.
1 . Open driver door (door must be open throughout the programming process).
2 . Pull directional indicator stalk to headlight flash position and hold.
3 . Insert ignition key and turn to auxiliary position (position 1), then release the directional indicator stalk.
4 . Flash headlights five times (acknowledge chirp from sounder, and the PATS LED will flash once).
5. NOTE: Up to five transmitters can be programmed. Push the second transmitter button directly after programming the first, etc. Do not repeat the complete sequence as the first transmitter will be erased.
Push any transmitter button (acknowledge chirp from sounder, and the PATS LED will flash once).
6. Turn 'OFF' the ignition and remove the key, (acknowledge chirp from sounder, and the PATS LED will flash once).
7 . Close driver door and check transmitter(s) functions

I tried your procedure on my 2003 S Type R but nothing happen. The only thing was that the door chime kept sounding as I moved the key from pos. 1 to 2. Another question regarding the procedure, do I press a button on the key fob thats in the ignition? I thought that when the key fob was in the ignition it was diabled.

I would expect so, maybe its enabled while in programming mode?

I've been doing more research and it seems that my car may need to be done using a IDS tool, I hope not since my Jaguar dealer may want around $200 to do it and I can't see paying that much. So I'll keep looking for another answer.
