Default wouldnt start last night

went outside to move the car last night at 10 30 to let my daughter onto the drive in her car and it wouldn't start, it was trying, chugging for a couple of seconds and then cut out, did this 7 or 8 times then started, it was still a bit lumpy but I ran it up the road and back and it improved, i then went out to it at 5 30 this morning to go to work and it started fine, any ideas what it could have been? I would have guessed dirt in its fuel but it hasn't been run below a quarter tank and its an 08 with 38000 on the clock so I wouldn't have thought would have much crud in the tank anyway

Bigstu: Hard to say for sure but I wouldn't be to concerned about it unless it does it again or there is a pattern.Could be when you turned the key you had your foot touching the gas peddle and didn't know it. (big guy big shoes small car) or one or more of the fuel injectors stuck open a bit dribbling excess fuel into the engine If it happens again on the 2nd try hold the gas peddle to the floor and see if it helps if so run a full can of fuel cleaner(Like GUMOUT) in a 1/2 tank of gas if not it's hard to tell without further info.

ive just got home from the footy and it started spluttering on way back and the car is displaying dpf full see manual, I know this aint a cheap thing but is it a main dealer only fix if it wont clean itself, gonna run up the motorway today. also should this make it splutter or could that be something else fuel related that has caused dpf to be full ?

put a bottle of lean drive into the fuel tank and went for a drive, just got back from a 70 mile run up the m6 motorway, the amber light has gone off and the display saying dpf filter full has gone but the car is still spluttering, also the display on start up showed 1400 miles to service, now after 70 miles it says 50 miles to service, now I haven't used a calculator but im pretty sure 1400 - 70 isn't 50, think im gonna have to get it to a garage

Bigstu: There is a way to clean it and you were on the right track with the road trip. Google Jag dpf filter and watch and read . The soot was caused by bad combustion and/or dirty fuel. Try to run ultraclean diesel for a while. There is a video for cleaning the filter, you have to get it up to 600 deg.but not to 800 deg. There is also video's for big trucks that have different systems. I don't know how Jag does it as I never have worked on a diesel Jag. I am sure the cleaner you mentioned BURNS the carbon out but is not a miracle worker on the first try. GOOGLE, READ UP, ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE dumping money into new parts. As for why it happened, it probably built up from sticky injectors or bad fuel, weak heaters, short trips or the combination of all.

The 2.2d X Types can do this even if all systems are in A1 working order. The problem occurs if the car has been used only for short trips that neither allow the engine to warm up fully (and X Type diesels are slow to warm up at the best of times!) nor the dpf regeneration cycle to cut in.

Bigstu, if you could give some details of your useage pattern of the car it might be revealing. Noting you were only going to move your car to allow your daughter access, that is one of the worst sorts of treatment to give your diesel! The EGR valve and DPF really do need a regular high revs run to keep their troubles to a mimimum!

thanks for the responses, the car is now at a mate of mines garage, he owns summit garage which was a rover dealership but obviously had to branch out after their demise, I took it to him after further developments, having gone on the motorway run etc as I said on previous post I went out yesterday morning at 5 30am to go to work and it wouldn't start, it was firing up for 1 or 2 seconds at most then spluttering out. the dpf full message came on again but with a red light on not the amber light, I tried about 10 - 15 times but couldn't start it so went in the house and had a cuppa, went back out to try again and after about 10 more tries it spluttered into life chugging for about 30 seconds before levelling out, I took it for a 5 mile run while phoning work telling them I was on holiday but the red light and dpf came back on and the glow plug light started flashing so I phoned my mate and told him I was on my way, he was gonna whack the computer on it today and go from there. I do a 2 mile journey to work and back every day but at least twice a week I drive 25 minutes to by moms and back with a good 10 minutes of the journey at between 50 and 60 mph, the car has only done 39000 but was off the road for more than 12 months before I had it a couple of months ago due to the old chaps ill health, I believe he probably did mostly local driving.

Hi you do not need to go to a dealer there are good diesel specialist,I know I work at one
Sometimes you have to bite the bullitt, you need to find out the soot saturation % of the D.P.F this will tell you what's happening if it's above 60% then your heading for trouble live data on computer should tell who ever is working it were the problem might be. Terry

update so far is that the computer found fault code p288, which they think is either the fuel pressure regulator or the injector control regulator, I presume this would cause the wrong amount of fuel going through and thus causing wrong burning to fill the dpf, am I making sense ?

Hi have just got the new thread,so in the morning I will find out what the code means,if your engine his not regenerating it's because of one of five engine components is faulty, the most common is glow plugs if one or more are faulty then the engine e.c.u sees this has a fault and will not carry out a regeneration and will continue to fill up with soot, the new euro regs will not let your engine Carry on polluting you will have to cure the problem, like I said someone needs to check live data and see what the problem might be.terry. More info tomorrow

If it's a fuel pressure problem, I think I'd start with a fuel filter change on a car of that has stood that long and has an uncertain(?) maintenance record

the maintenance record is bang on, full strathstone jaguar since being purchased from them and the last one less than 2000 miles ago which is why I was so surprised when it came up saying service due in 1400 miles then 50 then service needed

latest update is that the fuel regulator valve thingy has been fitted and the dpf has been cleaned out, fuel pressure is right up now and no fault codes stored but it wont start, we are going to try having the injectors cleaned tomorrow by a chap from petro chemicals who can apparently clean them directly with his machine

well this morning the dpf was removed again and it started so obviously still a blockage, petro chemicals sorted some stuff to give a good soak of the dpf in and then wash through again and its now running nicely, my mate is gonna just check it again in the morning before I collect it, hopefully all good now
